Yea, I was about to say. Money isn't an issue to these people...they just gotta be smart about it, for a change, and spend wisely.

And why is everyone so bent on a York U expansion? If anything Pearson should be getting an expansion first, in my opinion.

First of all, the York U expansion would be only two to four new stations tops, whereas the others are major new expansions.

Second, York has 45,000 students. That's a lot of people moving around the city at any one time. Parking is also a major problem at York. It's ridiculous for a "major" university to not be linked by rapid transit.

Third, the York U station at Keele/Steeles (which would also have a large parking lot) would allow people in Vaughan and Richmond Hill (and other suburbs) easy access to the downtown core. It could shave about 20-45 minutes off a drive to Wilson, Downsview or Finch stations. Also, there's a lot of factories north of Steeles that employ many workers, and they need transit as well. As I've said, Toronto has a decent subway, but the problem is that suburbanites don't have easy access to it.

I do agree though that there needs to be a rapid transit link to the airport. Almost every city in Europe and North America has such a link. Now that the GO Train to the airport has been vetoed by the people of Weston, it makes a subway link that much more important.

Oh, and we also need a bridge to the Island Airport.

How much traffic does the Island Airport get?

Doesn't the island residents bitch about noise pollution?

Good points. I'll admit that I wasn't too informed about it. From what you say though, it would definately make sense.

awesome! I guess if there were to be a subway to Pearson, which I haven't really seen it discussed, then I bet there would be some asses that would be against that too.

I'd guess that rapid transit to the airport has far less public support than citywide transportation improvements (nevermind vs. social programs and tax cuts).

the average person, who may never ever use it, probably doesn't give a shit about something like a subway link to the airport...they don't think of the overall economical benefit, they just want better service for them to get to work.

I say let the private sector pay for it.

Imagine the "Rogers Link" for a line running to the airport...hey, that's pretty good...someone go register that name

the Eglinton West line to Pearson International Airport was at one point being built concurrently with the Sheppard (stump) Line but was suddently stopped during the Harris administration and the tunnels were filled in again with Earth. i can't imagine how much money was wasted at that moment..

grinding to a halt .. the line never went a foot farther west of Eglinton Station and the Sheppard line stopped at Don Mills

nimbys strike again. Whatever happened to the good old days of expropriation when things actually got done?

As for fighting over who gets what. Thats just going to slow down the process even more. They should be happy that they are even thinking about subway expansion because then it might get the ball rolling on their project as well.

Thats the problem with toronto mentality. Everyone always works against each other and nothing gets done. No one ever works together.

This also happens in the nightclub/rave/dj community in toronto.

I go to UTSC, and I think that before any of this gets done, they need to make the TTC open 24hrs! Even if it was only one train every half an hour, you cannot tell me that there would be no demand for it.

Can someone tell me the reason TTC hasn't opened the subway 24hrs a day yet?

probably because the current fare system requires that an attendant be present at each subway station to ensure people are paying their fare with the exception of those entrances that only take tokens or a metropass.

many cities throughout the world, including the new Viva Transit system in York region use the 'honour' system whereby you simply purchase your fare and board the train/bus on your own. Random spot checks by conductors are then made to weed out cheaters who then face a hefty fine if caught.

If we used this type of fare payment system, it could open the door to having 24 hr subways and such since you wouldn't have to hire as many staff to administer each station.

Especially when morons like miller keep getting elected.

I said it with mcguinty and ill say it again with miller....
