You should take a trip south(or maybe even north) for a coupla hours, over here you have to work pretty hard to find anything that isn't Breaks or DnB. Granted those musics arent quite popular in status but they are almost the only EDM parties to be found. I have all sortsa friends who understand when I tell them I like trance music(although alot of them think that means ATB and Paul Oakenfold, or Zombie Nation), It wasnt quite that way when I was in high school, but now days it seems that everybody has at least 1 EDM cd that they like or that one of their Dj friends gave them or whatever. It seems that everybody is at least familair with a couple EDM musicians and knows what category they go in, at least all the people I have been meeting recently that is, but maybe that is only because I am meeting most of my friends in electronics classes and out at parties.
I dont think it is underground, nor do I think it is popular, it seems to fall somewhere in between, like a subculture that has been well established but not necessarily famous(like goths, something you dont see every day but that alot of people are aware of)
