Meh, what's the difference with respect to UV - if it emits too much, they can just use a filter coating.
The most efficient fluorescents are CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light, not Canadian Football League), which supposedly use 66% less energy on average than incandescents, so theoretically this LED invention is less efficient. But fluorescents also drive people crazy and only last 10 times as long as incandescents, whereas LEDs emit stable light and this invention lasts 50 times as long. LEDs are also dirt cheap to manufacture - once this gets industrialized, I can't imagine it costing even half as much as a fluorescent bulb.
Hope the guy's got a patent out - he stands to make a lot of money from this thing.
