Lol, not really sure what your issue is, if you've ever played on a pair of direct drive decks then a pair of belt drive you'll realise how flimsy and delicate they feel. It's not a matter of elitism, we're not just saying "direct drives are better, er, cos they are"... for me it's simply a matter of experience using the things!

A lot of it's because of the build quality of cheaper decks (admittedly most direct drive decks in the same price range tend to feel just as flimsy - but you'll find it hard getting a belt drive deck which isn't aimed at the bottom of the market) plus the pitch wavers a lot more with belt drive as the band stretches slightly, making it harder to beatmatch really accurately with them - although the question was regarding scratching which this doesn't really make any difference to.

Well Stu, I find you to be the first one to post a cogent argument on this thread about belt vs. direct drive TTs. I didn't mean to make it seem like they were of equal quality, just that sometimes people hear bits of info and don't really think them through (ex. the whole platter vibration thing). Basically, I'm a skeptic towards a lot of stuff I hear from audiophiles because there's hardly any qualitative research on stuff, it's all about subjective opinion. That's all.

Don't forget the shitty lag u start experience after a while in Belt Driven....

Just dont' buy belt man... they wear out.

When you are scratching you want a deck with decent torque to pick up the record again when you let it go. Or if you want to play a melody with a continuous tone using the pitch to hit notes with you want something with good torque, ect...
