watch some other dj's (not to say you are a gonna copy, but to get an idea what is goin on and to learn some new things.) , eventually, you will develop your own style. Have fun.. Dont forget to shop regularly so you dont get bored of your records!

i will say this once only, and then it's up to you!

practice,practice,practice and read and learn.

then you become better, with a little talent and determination.

depends how far you want to go with djing, like i only started it because i really loved it. it was a transgression from reading about the art for many years and apprieciating it and love for music. i would really like to take my djing further, but atm it's a hobby which i spend countless hours doing each day whilst at school.

when eqing you really need to listen to the mix and know the structure of some songs to an extent to make your mixing more beneficial.

whether you are making money from djing or just playing at home you may as well master the art of your own djing skills to your extent.

also things that helped was engulfing myself in it, which was the worst thing for me to do, as i was really good at school but then when i found love for music and djing. my work ethic at school dropped.

so for you dj's at secondary school, please do not let djing take over your education! cause you are only limiting yourself as i have learned to an extent and feel i could have finished my schooling off much better. i'm doing my exams now, and i have maths methods 2 morrow.

Thumbs up

At first I thought this post was not going to be original

I started djing because I love music and my fans can see that.
All this years I never lost my enthusiasm!

But then some good advise ....

And then the best part which made this post interesting

quote:

also things that helped was engulfing myself in it, which was the worst thing for me to do, as i was really good at school but then when i found love for music and djing. my work ethic at school dropped.

And the final words of wisdom

So overall this post has a structure and is very informative.

i would suggest taking a music class. almost everything i learned about music, how read it, write it, play instruments has translated into my mixing. i firmly belive that if i started mixing, w/out the background in music. my shizznit would be straight wack, yo.

plus, your understanding of music, and how to bend to your hearts content will be much deeper, and profound, than just listening to us tell you count, 4/8/16 or 32 bars... yadda, yadda, yaddaaaa...

First up, ditch the crossfader in my opinion. Work with the channel sliders.

2nd, learn to use your gain controls so that you don't bring tracks in too loud or quite.

Learn to phrase match as this will improve your DJing no end.

Learn to ride the pitch (optional but a good skill to have).

Learn to EQ your tracks as this needs to be done really well if you are going to be playing out.

Most importantly!
Learn your tunes as you have to know them well enough to know how long their intros/outros are, when a good time to drop a mix is and get a feel for how long each track is.

Once you have the above down quite well, let's say after a year or two then think about mixing in key (Harmonic mixing).

Cheers
Nem

I doubt it... im 15 years old and live in Vancouver B.C Canada.

Is riding the pitch meaning making the songs go at 4% and beatmatch from there?

And can someone with a lot of detial please explain what the hell phrase matching is!!!

Raur!
