You shouldn't be thinking about doing it as your job, because you want to 'get far' or because you 'want to succeed'. Success is most of the time dependent of what others think of you. So that would mean you haven't succeed if you're ot a famous DJ? That you would be nobody??
Just do it because you think it's fun, not because you want to reach something, or earn respect. Only then you'll be good at it (being good at something is really something else than being known for something!)

Try to remember that if you're making your job out of it, you will loose a big part of the fun. You can hear it by several DJ's: as soon as it has become a job, theý loose the feeling, and start to make compromises to keep everybody satisfied, because otherwise they'll loose fans. But they forget often that you can't keep everybody satisfied... The pressure can be very high, and you won't be able to play all the time what you want to play, you'll have to sacrify a bit of your own taste... So if you do it for the pleasure, and because you love music, and won't give in on your own taste, then you should maybe settle by doing it as your hobby. (anyting further is great, but don't set your hopes up too high) If you're goal is being famous (what I really hate), then you should have the attidtude like 'fuck my own taste, I'll be a crowdpleaser, and I'll send my demo's all over the world'.
There are some lucky bastards who still do what they really love to do, but it's like one in a million, and then you need a BIG helping hand and the good will of Miss Fortuna!

Don't forget: Dreaming of something is most of the times better than having the dream accomplished...

I wish you though good luck in whatever you decide!
