Also, if you're having problems with an optical mouse, you might want to check the surface it's on. The more solid and smooth a surface is, the less reliably an optical mouse will work on it. It's not necessarily the fault of "wireless" - a $1 mouse pad could solve all your problems.

That's the thing about trackballs, they have always been the most smooth device with accurate response even though it's only optical. Plus, it's a lot cooler twising knobs on your screen using a trackball.

I really don't understand why they aren't more popular.

Indeed, a good mouse pad can do wonders for smoothness and handleability.

I used my mouse on my wooden desk and it very rarely had these sudden 'spikes', using a mousepad solved all this.

Do this...either get yourself a decent mousepad (gaming mousepads do really well), if you want to stick with wireless go with the mx1000 from logitech (it's laser), or forget wireless if you can and just get like an mx518 or some microsoft optical if you don't like the feel of logitech mice. I personally use a logitech mx510 although I have an mx700 wireless on the side. I use it for gaming and producing and I NEVER have to deal with any lag. Read up on mouse dpi and you'll realize what's a good mouse and what isn't.
