Actually, the more and more you look into it, the more and more you realize that the two really have no relation whatsoever, and were borne, grown, and evolved completely separate from each other.
Techno was a black interpretation of futurism, wrought from the springboard of electro culture, breakdancing, bass music and robots, with its stronghold being the Midwest, USA.
Trance is whitebread music originally obsessed with neo-spiritualism, drugs, and consciousness expansion, squeezed from the dishcloth of northern Europe. It's always had a teutonic/nordic aesthete to it, from its birth in the industrial scene to its evolution into pop dance.
Total contrast there. Grungey black dystopian futurism made from crude analog synths belching out harsh computer sounds versus pristine white uplifting spiritualism made from user-friendly VSTs doling out lovely strings and pretty melodies. The only thing they have in common is that they are in 4/4 time. Other than that, they represent polar opposite sides of humanity (or inhumanity).
