check the dj forum.. if you are buying gear..buy the proper stuff the first time.

basically boils down to :

tech 12's for vinyl
pioneer cdj 200,800 or 1000's depending on how rich you are.(for cds)

lots of good mixers around

my own personal opinion (and philosophy I'm trying to follow as a n00b myself)...learn to beat match before anything else.

I'd rather hear near-flawless mixing than fancy effects, samples, etc. in a set filled with trainwrecks.

It's pretty much you-get-what-you-pay-for. Don't buy anything with the word "belt" on it unless you want a fancy new beer coaster So yeah like the guys above said, if you've got money to burn then go right into the Tech12 goodness ^_^

Also, consider picking up this holy bible of DJing. It's a romantic look at it, so once you get serious you may want to pick up something else which is more reality/business based... but judging on your first post, you're doing this because of the music you love and that's the best reason imo I've had this book for months now and it's been invaluable.

^agreed. buy the right stuff the first time. You don't want the frustration of learning on stuff that won't stay locked.

Hai, that being said, it wouldn't hurt to learn how to deal with crappy turntables. Like, visit a friend just don't tell him why you wanna try out his crappy STR8-60's (I AM that friend *cries* so poor! hehe)

Why? Never know when you'll find yourself with a club gig staring down tables which have seen better days. Not likely, but best to be prepared instead of looking dumbfounded because you've been pampered by the mechanical bliss of tech12's

thx for all the feedback.ill let you guys know how it progresses, my cousin used to spin house/trance when he was a meth head. im gonna go check out his gear. let em teach me the basics and then go on from there

^ i agree to an extent that it is a little crazy how hyped we get for someone who plays others ppl's music. (my favorite djs are producers to though, and usually hope to hear their productions when seen)


but seriously, even if you're awesome at spinning, i don't think in any way you're considered a musician. i'm a producer and as a hobbie play turntables, and even though turntables requires certain skills to good at, i think a dj is giving themselves far too much credit if they consider themselves musicians

Ex-DJs can be an excellent source of tunes When you get yourself some decks convince him to sell some (or all!) of his stuff in bulk, you'll make off like a bandit! At the least, you can buy some of his crappy stuff dirt cheap and wear them out from practicing Wouldn't want to wear out your first few records just learning to spin, which are prolly your favourite tunes, we always buy favourites when we start lol

A DJ is an Entertainer....there purpose is to entertain a crowd. I agree there is a lot of skill involved in order to be the top in the business.....but I think we all need to remember that they are entertainers....just like the clowns at the circus
