I don't think it's necessarily about feeling threatened, per se. Yes, people do put others into categories because it makes it easier to laugh, but this is also how the human mind works; we schematize everything. It makes it easier for us to talk about things by forming a common idea as social beings.
Now, as far as metrosexuals adopting the qualities of homosexuals, I think this is a two fold reaction. One is in the name, as homosexuality seems to be a common social term, while heterosexuality is not: heterosexuality appears to be "normal" and thus lacks a need for a name. Secondly, traditional men aren't supposed to spend their time primping and making their apperance desireable. They are supposed to be naturally attractive and strong. However, you could certainly make the case that working out is a form of "putting on makeup" for men, though more permanenent, of course.
In any case, I've got nothing against the whole metro idea, and I've definitely adapted some of the characteristics myself. But you won't find me picking out makeup or trying to color coordinate my home. I know by instinct if I like how something looks, be it clothing, home furnishing or a mating partner, and thats how I make my decisions: not through the "study" of these areas.

such thresholds are determined by generally accepted cultural norms. |
generally acceptable has no inherent timeframe, social norms change...
plus i'm not one to adhere to social norms..

I don't think hes claiming that the definition can't change. Metrosexuality clearly doesn't have a static definition, in the way that heterosexuality, for instance, does.
And your adherence to social norms is irrelevant . No one likes to admit to adhering to these norms...i wonder why that is....
