a couple of points that have helped me when i was startin out;

1. i always beatmatch the percusion NOT the kickdrums!

2. i find it helps if you use your wrong ear to beatmatch, in other words if your right eared then use your left ear when usin the pfl to beatmatch!

but everyones different, and im generally quite a backwards person

thats a good tip its alot easier to beatmatch by listening to the percusion instead its more obvious when it starts drifting plus some tracks u cant hear the beats very well anyway.

what? i didn't think being right/left eared (like right/left handed?) was possible... at least, i've never heard of it. how do you determine which ear is the "right" one?

music sounds the same in both of my ears.

lol i think he means watever ear you are more used to (i think). ive been at it for abt 5 years now. ive always used my right ear to beatmatch. today i tried it with my left ear and found it extremely difficult to get it in time as i found i couldnt hear it as well. i guess its a matter of training your ear to recognize the subtletys during a mix

yeah it will sound the same.

lol, usually you will naturally put the headphone cup to whatever ear you use most often. i dont know if you actually "left or right eared" but when i started out i always used my right ear the read that tip somewhere & started using my left ear (which didnt really feal natural to me) but it made my mixin better.

i suppose it depends on how you listen through the phones too, some people use both cups to cue up!

i'm left eared. that's because i always talk on the phone w/the reciever on the left. it feels super unatural to use my right ear when talking on the phone. when i can't beatmatch in my headphones, i expose the right ear. especially now, since i only have one monitor set up. -on the right side. when i finally design/construct my dj desk/station/work area, i will have both v8's set up. it will be insane.
