this is an interesting topic . there are things where the intel chip is better than the apple gXxx, and vice versa .. i haven't heard that news that FP operations were faster on the intel, rather than the mac .. then again, math operations base solely on how quick the adder is, and the ability to perform shift operations on instructions for advanced computations.

i heard that apple's perform branch predictions faster than intels, which being the case why apple has lesser cases of apps hanging .. however, hanging apps usually fall 80% on the software developer's duty, but the hardware has to be able to learn how to allocate space in memory, utilize whatever resources are available, and everything ..

I personaly hate using a mouse so not having the right click on a mac doesn't bother me ( well actually you can just hit the ctrl or apple key I forget which and then click on your mouse and that equals right click ).

Saying you don't want a Mac cause of the lack of a right click shows how little you know about them and have possibly been fed excessive amounts of stereotype about the product without trying it yourself.

I personaly use Winblows and MacOs machines all the time. I don't really have a preference. Both have their pros and cons.

In the case of a laptop if you need a big screen go for a PB or else an ibook otherwise just buy a cheap pc laptop they're a bargain these days.

no you are completely right about being able to run a FTP off a mac, you can do that on literally any platform/computers these days. yes and maybe even more securely but i wouldn't trust the stability of the OS to hold up versus a winblows or linux OS. I'm saying a laptop should be used for xxx amount of things which im sure a PB or PC laptop can handle respectively, i was just trying to make a corrolation between the stability of each platform per type of work you'll be putting it through. As for mac going intel, thats old news, i'd still say grab a PB since prices are twindling with the intel chipset on the brink of exposure, you'll get what you want for the type of work you want it to do. if this is going to be your ONLY machine which you'll use literally every day then I'd suggest a PC laptop. Like ^^^ said, alot of eyecandy is put into mac machines, i wouldn't trust alot of things if i were considering how long the pb would last me.
