Re: Re: Re: Paul van Dyk - Dubmission (May '92) - first known PvD liveset

Now, as I wrote, it is the first known set of PvD. There is another one from 1992 I know of (Glasgow in May or November 1992) but that's it.
And yes, he started earlier as a DJ. But the exact date is unknown. In the more or less official biographies, the Dubmission series, some clubs where he played (Tresor, Bunker, a club called 'Turbine Rosenheim') are the first. I myself know that he did not start his DJ career at the Dubmission series but at the so-called "brain parties" in 1990 and 1991. But do not ask me where this took place and why exactly "brain". Maybe Brain because of drugs. I don't know.
Recently I found the web page of the "brain party producer" of that days. maybe I will ask him about the parties and the early PvD. maybe... |
About a month ago PvD said in a german radio show (Radio Fritz) that his first gig was in Tresor 1991. I'm quite sure about this 'cause they were talking about "first time".
So he propably didn't play at those "brain parties" in 1990.

I looked at it. You are right. The brain parties did not start 1990. They started in September 1991 when the organizer of many of the Techno events of those early days in Berlin, "DJ WolleXDP" (also known as "DJ Tekknozid", homepage here) eventually thought that he would go away a little bit from the very hard Detroit Techno stuff to somewhat smoother tunes. He did it as a producer and invented "The Brain". The Brain used so-called "brainmaschine", special glasses with lots of small LEDs that resulted in stroboscopic flashes directly into your eyes. You can roughly imagine what happened to some of the people.... Paul van Dyk was one of the DJs of the brain parties. WolleXDP himself was absolutely against the commercialisation of his music, that is probably the reason why he is only known to insiders. Quoting excerpts from www.techno.de about WolleXDP and his project XDP (XDP for 'X-tasy Dance Project'):
(english; for the original german version see below):
- 3'90: Tekknozid, the first 10 Tekknoraves in Germany ... XDP merges Acid and EBM, calls Techno 'Tekkno' and invents 'Rave' as a covering format for large Tekkno-Dance parties. The club scene locations are completely unpolished and the music becomes more and more brutal...
- 9'91: with "THE BRAIN" XDP wants to re-establish smoother variants of the music in the scene. XDP calls this music 'Trance' and transmits for the first time the signals of a brain machine to the dance floor ("Mindfrequency Tests").
- Summer '92: acting against the full commercialization of Techno and House by "Happy-Trance" and "Funfair-Raves", WolleXDP opens "HARTWARE", the "hardest Techno Club of the World" in the Berlin 'Bunker'.
Opens a question: does this "calls the music 'Trance'" mean that 'Trance' came into existence?

Early PVD mixes 1992-1993
Hey - yes, there are two sets, which I do know of now (and I have both) - the sets are both split into two rougly 29-30min parts, both from Dubmission in Berlin. One is recorded May '92 and one is June '92 - both feature tracks of the era such as Humate Love Stimulation, tracks from Prodigy "Experience" and Vision of Shiva. - ie Early German type trance from the era. Both sets are Kid Paul + Paul van Dyk, they sorta do a tag team, but it is clear that one of the parts of the two part set is more a PVD style and one is Kid Paul's set.
Check this link for the full download info on MixesDB, they are hosted here:

Also, I found the full 1993 Paul van Dyk set from HR XXL Clubnight Frankfurt. You can download that here:

Also, Dubmission @ Planet from Mar 1,1993, Paul van Dyk here:

Hope this helps, good luck.
Enjoy,
