I dont do #3. I split cue (i think)

What I do is have one track playing and the other on cue, put the headphones on both ears and switch the cue mode to ch1-ch2 so I hear both at the same time in the headphones. I don't understand why not much people do this, I find the one ear on one ear off thing quite difficult!

if u want to make it REALLY old school...

try mixing without the pitch slider. meaning, keep the slower track in beat with one finger on the platter at all times.

Yes people, this is just an exercise! Not that we don't know how to mix, but I know I certainly use all the EQ's, filters, and cue'ing features of my Xone 92. I just thought it would be "fun" to go back to channel volumes only, no eq's, and the most basic cueing (one channel at a time). Also switching cue'ing ears is kinda freaky at first after you get so used to doing it one way.

If you play out and you are stuck on a Rane rotary, with a single monitor on the "wrong" side, that's what you'll have to deal with. I feel the more variables I throw into making my mixing more difficult, the better I'll get!

Haha that's how I used to mix before I got decks worth having

Here's a proper challenge

Try doing all of the above without monitors but you're still not allowed to cue more than one channel at once, not allowed to cue master so you just have to tell if they're in time by switching between which one you're listening to haha

Record it, play it back...

I think it's cool Ryan!

I definitely find it fun to go back and basically mix the way I did when I just started, bare bones, with a cheap little gemini mixer where using the EQ's was basically pointless anyway (The response on them was exceptionally minimal), it just throws the focus of practice back towards track selection, phrasing, and general programming instead of focusing on the minute details of the mix...

Edit: Holy shit Stu! You just gave me my new challenge of the week...

With rotary faders, even. VERY nice.

It's my birthday next week (turning the big 30) so I treated myself to it. I'm so good to me.
