First problem that ruined the video game industry was high powered consoles, too much nice graphics and lack of gameplay. Now, moronic unskillful games like GTA and etc ... they would must like keep making selling these type of games, due to this new generation of gamers.

aww man! how could I forget Metal Gear Solid!

So John, since we seem to share the same attitude about gaming nowadays (graphics first, gameplay second...as seen with the lackluster Xbox 360) I have to ask you this: what are your thoughts on the Nintendo Revolution, which de-emphasizes graphics?

Its amazing how you guys are saying that the GTA is recycled, and then you start givng FF, GT, MEtal Gear, Resident Evil as examples.

Each one of these series', including the entire video game industry, is guilty of the same thing which you are accusing GTA of. They all re-use the same ideas, concepts and strategies which make them 'great' games. They all have their style, and that is the whole point of making a sequel, to draw upon the success of the original, and to add some tweaks in order to keep the game 'fresh' and dynamic enough for the gamer.

zokissima in reference to recycling the engines. Wow, do you have any idea how expensive game development would be, if everybody created a new engine for every new game? Almost all FPSs buy another engine, and just built their games on top of them, that's how the industry is built.

And again, when referring to GTA, you are still looking at the same basic elements, which advertisers use for shock value. When fans like us, say that we play it for much, much more than that, you seem to just discount it.

The truth is, only two types of game can even hold my interest these days, for more than 2 weeks, Racing and GTA. Simple.

Graphics before game play: if you looked at the GTA series, you would also see that it was never at the forefront of graphics technology. the PS2 versions all look like shit, the Xbox versions are a step above, and the PC versions are FAR behind anything good avaialbe on PC. Seriously guys, play the damn game, and compare to the rest of the industry before you critique it.

Here is an interesting article, by John Dvorak. He is an editor for PC Mag, and a great writter in my opinion. Although he does not talk specifically about the GTA series, he does seem to share all of our sentiments about he game industry:

Doom4: the end of the video game industry
by John C. Dvorak.

Its a really good read, i scanned it from a PC Mag from a few months ago.

GTA3 is also some of the laziest game programming I've ever seen.

fuck... I am gonna play Contra: Shatterd Soldier tonite....

Console games are usually quite lacking in innovation... I mean, Halo is just working off the Tribes model.

Metal Gear Solid 1 -> MGS3 was a bigger evolution than GTA3 to San Andreas was.

Resident Evil was getting pretty stale until RE4 came out; and completely re-invented itself and is now one of the smoothest, most intense action-horror games.

Obviously the basic concept is gonna be the same; but look at how many different things are incorporated into those games to make it a new experience.

You're right when you say that a lot of the industry recycles their ideas; and there's even more games out there who are guilty of copying GTA and jumping on the "free-roaming" bandwagon. And do a much worse job than GTA. But like I said before; there's a difference between a game thats a masterpiece (meaning everything in it is perfected, it's nearly flawless. eg. metroid prime) and a game like GTA which is a great game at most. It still features the same stiff controls it did when part 3 came out; same crappy animation as before, poor coding, etc etc.

But you can't deny that it's main claim to fame, and the reason why it's one of the best selling games of all-time, is NOT for it's engrossing story. Most people (or casual gamers, if u will), and I really mean most, like it because of the mindless freedom it gives you.

I havent played this 50 cent game, but wow I'm really surprised anyone can bash GTA 3+ (other than the violence). I've been playing games on and off for 15 years, and I was completely blown away by GTA 3. The gameplay and overall value is incredible, I think most professional reviewers agree. Look at any review and it scores close to perfect. It's worth 5x as much money as other horsecrap out there. (I'm talking about the PC version here of course, console versions are a joke)

I've been playing video games for about 15-16 years; with a huge interest in games and the industry for the past 9 years. And I wasn't really impressed with any of the GTA games. The most I'd give any GTA game out of 10 would be 8...and even that would be pushing it.

Console games lack innovation? How so? I could say the exact same thing about PC games.

Where's the innovation in Half-Life 2, for instance?

I agree though, Halo is probably the least innovative FPS game out there. (well k, thats pushing it, cuz then there's games like Doom3)

The invovative thing about HL2, was again the engine, and not the game it self. THe physics modeling was definitly a step above anything before, in regards to the fact that you can actually interact with most of the items in the world. That was its single biggest strength. That is was Valve was going for.

Otherwise it was a simple FPS. They really wanted to be able to market the game engine, as the new gen, and I believe it is. Usually in games, you can only interact with objects that he developers have actually thought about. Here you can pick up, and use ANYTHING! Very cool.

Gravity Gun + Saw Blade = FUN!
