What brands do you two recommend?

CD-Rs?

I like Memorex personally.

Just don't go cheapo-brand and you should be fine.

for dvd+/-r get TY (Taiyo Yuden) blanks. This is not the brand name of them, it is the code that is put on them to see who made them. then some company buys them (ie maxell or fujifilm) and puts their name on them.

so how do u find them? well before, MIJ (made in japan) dvd blanks usually meant that they were high quality blanks, like TY quality, but now most/all of the big name stores dont sell MIJ media. usually its MIT (made in taiwan).

if u want to buy TY blanks, go to NCIX.com and they have deals on TY media, especially at this time of the year i think theyll have something. if u dont wanna do that, try sticking to MIJ media if u can find it and if not, then MIT maxell and fujifilm spindles are usually a good choice. memorex is a hit and miss brand. try staying away from mom and pop shops where they claim to have TY media for a very low price. if its too good to be true, then it probably is.

thers also a lot of articles/discussions on differnet codes that are used on blank media which you coudl read up on. im not to sure about DL stuff since its not that common yet.

taiyo yuden and ritek/ridata would be the top choices for dvdr media....
as for dvdshrink, it is a great piece of software to compress video to fit on a single layer dvd+/-r until dual layer blank media drops significantly in price. when using dvdshrink, set it to perform deep analysis and set it to 'smooth' for quality enhancements, remove any subtitles that you dont need to allow more space for the actual movie. remove the extras if you want too. the more bullshit that you remove, the better the quality of the final outcome will be.
dvdshrink is the easiest and fastest way to compress video but is not the best way. the compressed video looks fine on most televisions unless you got a huge screen (40+ inches).

the best way to compress would be to use CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder). set it to at least 5 passes and the video will be great. mind you, this would take a few hours. the last time i use CCE and did 5-pass, it took about 8 hours. you can download a frontend for CCE called DVD Rebuilder and give that a whirl.

if the material is shit, the pits and lands that the write laser "burns" on to the disc would be distorted and a lot of players would have trouble reading the disc.
