A lot of the times I've had this issue, people have complained that it's "repetitive".
Of course it's fucking repetitive, it's called "trance".
A lot of people who aren't into EDM can't understand the merit of the music, mainly because there's no real image attached to it. Whether people admit it or not, one of the main reasons they're into Green Day or Cradle Of Filth or Franz Ferdinand or Eminem or Dashboard Confessional is that there's an image/style attached to these bands which they find appealing.
All you have to remember is that, in a lot of cases, these people have no musical taste at all - they just want an excuse for floppy hair and studded belts.
And there are a lot of people out there who WILL appreciate and understand EDM even if they aren't necessarily fans; however, these people often have musical tastes that are already somewhat mature. For example, I'm friends with people who listen to Sigur Ros and Radiohead and GYBE, and they don't have a problem with EDM at all - in fact many of them listen to it on the side.

I wasn't talking specifically about how i feel about people hating my music. Although i realise you were addressing the whole thread.
My comments were more along the lines of trying to explain to people that when they all sweep the brush across all of us calling us all 'dance heads' that it's not true, and that in fact, there are a lot of various genres of dance music.
Now trying to describe techno would probably be easier then describing trance IMO of course.

ps. Col, You're completely right about some friends not minding EDM music etc, and the comment of listening to it on the side made me chuckle. I often see some of my friends listening to music on MSN, and sometimes you'll see them listening to some of the music i have given them over the year, be it House music, progressive stuff or some lovely commercial Armin/Tiesto! lol
It's not people's opinions thati care so much about, it's being able to show them exactly what i like that frustrates me, and unless they're at my place i have no real way of showing them.
I now have a group of about 7 of us who enjoy listening to trance in general. Basically it will be the main genre of music for the whole night. These lads used to like RnB, and various other guitar bands etc. Being slightly naive i described then showed them some examples. They were intrigued and then began to like the music. 4 years later they've all got a hefty chunk of their hard drive taken up by sets, hours of sets. Something i find funny as they used to ask me how the hell i could have a single mp3 file which was 2 hours long!.. now they listen to them weekly!

You should see how hard it is to explain what trance is in high school. Everyone just assumes its techno gay shit made with just computers that go beep beep beep. Then they go listen to their hip-pop sellout stuff. Everyone here also assumes that if you listen to trance you do E! What the hell is wrong with them! Sigh.
However some of my friends like drum and bass which is the closest they will ever get to EDM.

I'de get teased a little during high school about liking "techno music". There were some kids into it, but the vast majority were the punk, metal, pop, r&b and rap type. I was one of the few kids who was listening to trance on his way home from school. Majority of people thought I was into techno. There was this kid in my spanish class that was into detroit techno, and I told him about trance and he had no clue, until I stumble upon his MySpace profile recently and find that he is into some of the DJs/Producers I had told him I liked, such as Armin Van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. So as some people might tease you about it, others might be inspired and find some stuff you like, they like too. I've heard a few fellow students who have gotten into trance and other forms of EDM after being big into rap or punk in high school, which I think is pretty cool. People's tastes change, and sometimes you leave a bigger impact on them then you think. Heck I wanted to DJ a school dance my senior year, but no one wanted to listen to my stuff, it was all about the rap, pop and r&b, which are fine forms of music, but EDM is just what has appealed to me for many years, and i've always loved sharing it.

Yeah, some people just don't like trance. Maybe they haven't heard enough of it to make an unbiased opinion, maybe not. It's definitely hard to express why electronica sounds so good.
If I'm at a club, and some euro-mainstream song randomly comes on amidst the hip-hop, some friends look at me and say "Hey, they're playing some techno! You should enjoy this!"
I smile and die a little inside.
