till I realized she was nasty.
There have been many studies that show that video games improve cognitive abilities and hand-eye coordination. The army uses video games for training, and doctors are playing a type of "game" when they do micro-surgeries on areas by camera

Its called Everquest. If im not mistaken, I think there were 5 or 6 people who had been reported dead for various reasons ranging from seizure to, lack of food, getting to attached to characters, and being left in the car by parent. However, WoW is still new and an assload of people are playing, so I expect it to take the crown of total deaths within the next year.

I'd rather games don't look that realistic (as far as humans are concerned, anyway). It's just plain disturbing, especially if there's hacking and slashing involved.

It's about time! I'd have no problem living an alternate reality.
Thats actually not that extremely hard to make, first making the model look exactly like the character is the hardest bit but even that isn't that extremely hard, they even have software that scan your head and make a duplicate 3D model straight away.
Those wrinkles are done with alpha maps that are inverted to form bumps. Those hairs are done with either Maya or 3D Studio or any other 3D package with their Hair & Fur tools.
The lighting could be High Dynamic Range lighting.
First off if video games are going to look like that in the future, it will be a expensive investment. Software that can render that in realtime is simple unavailable at the moment due to the lack of resources.
Games now can all use normal mapping just to decrease the amount of polygons on screen but these kind of CG take at least 10 minutes to render one frame, and thats on a Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz, 1 gig Ram computer. How powerful of a gaming system do you think is needed to render 40-60 frames a second? When a system is powerful enough to do that, then its possible to have games running this good.

Scientists have already created a program that allows you to control objects on a screen with only the use of brainwaves, eye-movement and some sensors attached to your head from the console. Its expensive, but give it a decade or so, and it will be huge. Just look at the games today. How far do companies expect to go by mainly basing thier ability to sell the product by visuals alone? Within next 2 generations of consoles, graphics will pretty much become what CGI is today and more innovative projects will arise. This is why I think Nintendo will probably win out overall. Hell, just look at what they are doing with the Revolution.
my sentiments exactly.
I was really skeptical about Nintendo at first; before they showed of their new console; but now I'm looking forward to it.
