I like to work long mixes when appropriate. But at the same time I've heard some 32 beat mixes that sound better than 98% of the two minute mixes I've heard. A long mix isn't always the best solution.

Mixing progressive house is the best :P Not just mixing 2 records together but creating a sub track in the process

i've never spun any type of house before , but im thinking highly about ordering a few house mixes i like and kinda f*ckin around with it to see how serious i am.. as of now all i really mix is prog melodic techy type trance..

anyone here mix psytrance ?

I have three of modes of mixing.

"Bet you didn't notice that" mode where I try to pick tracks that blend well and are similar so you don't notice a big change in style or key.

"I'm going to tease you for a while" mode. You can hear the track coming but it still works musically.

"Bosh, I just dropped a bomb on you!" mode. Key, style and energy change.

These modes cross over and there are many ways to achieve each one. Personally I find a lot of the guys that hold a mix for a long time very one dimensional. I hear a lot of prog house warm up guys doing that before me.
It's fine if you are in the bedroom but when you play a dance floor you have to get people excited and just doing that isn't going to do it. You need to vary and also respect the tracks that you are mixing and the events that take place within them.
A lot of trance tracks give you so many oportunities to do creative stuff with them it's really just a question of knowing your tracks.

Due to the tempo of Psytrance being quite fast and frantic, this will allow you the luxury of being able to throw the cross fader around and mess around with kill switches. It's a bit more forgiving in some respects but presents new challenges and oportunities.

For me, it's all about layering and selecting pieces of tracks that work well with pieces of other tracks. Listening to someone merely glueing one track after the other can be fun for home listening, because it makes you focus on the tracks rather than the transition, but mixing only really gets interesting when you're somewhat more creative, taking different pieces of different tracks and actually create music of your own with em.

I should get into Ableton a bit more. Plus I need a third TT

I am new to mixing and have begun with trance. Like stated above, I would say that with Psy you probably have to be more creative with your mixing then trance to make it sound good because the songs themselves are creative. With trance the beat is usually always the same but with Psy it just seems like it is all over the place.

yea i get the same problem. cutting the lows of a psy track always leaves me with a really annoying kick. like you said. more practice i guess.

well, i normally mix techno so i'm a big fan of kills switches, cuts and crossfading. but as i said in the post above this one, using the kill switches on psy tracks tends to leave me with annoying mid-range kick that makes the mix sound soo horrible.
