This is a tough one, and I'm so sad it really is like this cos trance used to be so powerful for so many people...

What do you think could help things?
Despite how passionate and hardworking local crews are in putting nights on (Unify/5am etc), maybe the big guns need to help out- Future Entertainment etc- a huge promoter who can help advertise and draw in crowds, make it a place to be seen in...

What do you think is going wrong?
ASOT; the music; DJ's thinking/feeling obligated to play the 'latest and greatest' formualic trance shit of today; too many new nights starting and not attracting a big crowd and vibe from the 'test' (ie opening night)

What do you want or go looking for in a night out?
In trance- music that moves me and is beautiful, along with pretty lights and lasers! I think it would be good for a superclub atmosphere to get in dancers/pretty girls promoting something or other! (But hey, I'm being influenced by movies etc here where there's definitely vibe, I don't know if this really exists!)

How is it that a genre so big globally (in the edm scene i mean) is doing so poorly in a city as brilliant as Melbourne?
Cos we don't have our own international! We need just one Phil K/Infusion etc trance equivalent we can proudly call our own and support all the way; we need just one OneLove trance equivalent crew that is the 'brand' for Melbourne trance; we need a local production team that remix supurbly that trance DJ's fully support (ie a Dirty South/TV Rock).

All in all though, we just need decent trance music to be made again!! I am seriously struggling with the crap out there at the moment. I can go to a local night and see how good the DJ's are... but they're spinning pretty weak tunes. Until there's some good music, trance will stay crap. We go and see the Ferry's/Tiesto's/G&D's/PVD's as much because they've done some awesome production work in the past and we know we'll get to hear it! (imho, I guess!)

i agree with the vee (<3 bassy_queen)... on the lack of quality music side of things.

unfortunately this problem isn't limited to melbourne, it's global imo.

Re: The state of trance in Melbourne.....

I think Trance is dying all throughout Australia; now Josh has stopped running ANOT and Trancetribe is homeless trance has officially died in Sydney

After we (trancetribe) got kicked out of Suzie Q's because a Handbag House night offered them more money for a weekly night we were unable to find a venue after four months of looking. Every venue would give us that "if it's trance we dont want them!" even though the vibe we had at Suzie Q's was on par with any House night.

"Trance" has become a dirty word; even the boys that run Habit which for the most part of the night is Progressive House have to conceal from the venue owners that they play oldcshool prog trance later in the night. And the amusing thing is whenever the DJs drop a trance bomb the crowd goes nuts and you'll hear some chin stroking muppet say "dude, how good is this electro track!"

It's the Hard Trance and Hard Style scenes that have perpetuated this trashy, gurner, drug fucked stigma that has attached itself like a parasite to the trance scene in Sydney.

fark i hate that type of music

House is on the radio. Trance isn't (well not really). And lots of people drink - house is the drinking man's EDM.

Plus I think people are just waiting for the trance big boys to show up and play, rather than yeah, hear local DJs play what's been on ASOT.

It's the same problem in Brisbane... if you like trance and don't like it hard or cheesy, you've got to wait for someone to play Family or a big event. Hell, you can even catch D&B weekly on the radio and have a night of psytrance every month, but nobody is interested in the uplifting stuff. Of course, the problem is slightly worse up here thanks to the sparse population of clubbers relative to Melbourne and Sydney...

i will post more later.

but we all know this scene (particularly these boards) are littered with bullshit.. Lots of people who are full of it, and people who partake in the backstabbing rubbish of it all, in the name of getting ahead. Im not saying this is the cause of the problems, but it cannot help. We now have to realise that no-one is getting ahead because the trance is now dieing. People here have the talent to get it ahead, but people need to start working as a team instead of individually... Yes, its hard to put your pride aside, and im definately someone who needs to swallow their pride too. But people need to be more courtious to each other... Things like going to a fellow persons night and not even getting talked to by the operator of it is poor form. Little squabbles over differences in opinion = poor form. Other people at our level treating other people as though they're inferior life forms. ALL POOR FORM!!! Before we look at trance in general, i think we partly need to look at ourselves. We are a big chunk of the parties we all put on!!! And we are all pushing for the same, common goal!!!

queen vee..really good post! You make alot of good points.

Soups i agree with alot of what u r saying as well, we are the people running nights/ djing at parties etc and its our obligation to make sure the scene pushes ahead and invites the average clubber; not the average clubbers responsability to find us imo.

I dont know dave. imo tech trance was something that needed to happen given how shitty alot of the melodic trance was getting.

If its a whole set of tech-trance it sounds like a cheezy b-grade hard trance set, but if there are just a few tracks amongst the more uplifitng stuff i love it.

I think this is more a matter of musical taste tho rather then anything that has been detrimental to the scene as a whole..
