A whole lot more than you realize.
Compressing the kick adds harshness and (sometimes) tail to it. Compressing the bass brings it more up-front. Compressing them together is done to prevent clipping.
Remember, compression only reduces the dynamic range. If you compress the kick and bass together, but not separately, and the bass has a large dynamic range or just isn't quite at the right volume, it's going to sound quite messy when they're compressed together and it's also very easy to get the annoying "pumping" effect (which is even worse than side-chained compression).
Simply because a compressor doesn't make any noticeable difference on the sound of a "single instrument" does not mean it's not doing anything. Compression is supposed to sound transparent. More than anything else it's a way of increasing the apparent volume while preserving headroom in the mix, and since the kick and bass are not only the loudest elements of a mix together, but also the loudest elements individually, it's often very important to compress them both.
