Let's see where china heads.

At 20% economic growth per year on 1.5 billion people, id be worried if i were you.

They are about to own our asses big time. China could very well be the factor that pushes north america into the third world in this century.

Only if they were smart enuff to work with each other and help each other, then they can surpase North America. But they never happen, for the past 4000 yrs, chinese ppl have never helped each other.

That type of growth is only seen in developing nations, and can never be sustained over a long period of time. They will level out to the 2-5% that most industrialised nations see on average, because there is only so much room to grow.

People are touting India and China to take over the world, wrong. Yes they are both growing rapidly, and both are finding a niche in the world markets, the problem is that so much of their population is still based out in the rural areas, and has limited access to resources. When 500+ million people are poor, you aint going nowhere.

actually the more they lift the veils of socialism the more progress they make. The only reason china has suddenly started to do so well is because they realized that they have to be more capitalistic. China will never truely acheive their best until they remove the rest of the socialist restraints.

And while they are lifting many restrictions, we in the west impose more and more on ourselves.

Maybe in their economic policies, but they still rule with an iron fist to the detriment of the population.

How about the fact that they are trying to limit free speach on the internet? Over the course of the last year, they have started ristricting internet news, that which is created and even accessed in China. They have limited and shut down blog sites based in China. They are limiting these things on the ISP level. Which means info can't get in or out when they rule.

I would bo much more worried about something like this, vs a pit bull ban.

kind of like how the government controls our access to information more and more?

The CRTC reminds me a lot of how communist countries are run. The government decides which radio, tv, and now which satellite radio stations you can watch/listen to. They even decide which formats should and should not exist in a marketplace. You have to apply to the government to get a cable station? Give me a break.

As i said, they are loosening their grip over there and at the same time we are tightening ours.

I dunno about India, but in PRC, the head honchos don't give a damn about most of PRC's citizens. So what if a lot of their rural citizens are poor? As long as the cash keep coming in, they could care less what really goes on. (Hence poor safety record in a lot of China's industries...)

How long have these rules been in place in Canada? You need a license to operate any type of business in Canada, which just places restrictions on the conditions by which you operate your business.

What China is doing, is in not comparable on the same scale. China is limiting the single biggest tool for free speech ever created. In Canada you want to start up a site and talk about smack about the government you can, but in China you get shut down. Here if you want to blog about your day you can. In China you get shut down.

In reference to formats, are you talking about radio/tv formatting for programming, or technical/scientific?

PRC = Pacific Rim Countries?

Which rich and powerful leaders really care about the poor or insignificant?

With India it is much the same. Corruption runs rampant, and nothing can be accomplished without a greased wheel. Did you notice how India and China have both decided to start space programs in the last 10 years? All of a sudden these countries have money to finance exploration missions to space. China has even sent an astronaut into space in the last year.

When money is newly invested in a poorly controlled society, the most powerful and educated often look after their interests. They want to make a good impression on the world, so they invest in headlines. IBM and Microsoft are going to invest $1.5+ billion USD each, over the next 5 years into India. Do you think a farmer out in the country is going to see that money? Nope. It will go to fixing the pot holes which lead up to the foreign embassies. The nicest part of New Delhi is the embassy area because it is so well maintained.

There's no doubt that China's draconian government and laws make Canada look like anarchy, but they're now moving toward free markets, while we are moving away from them. That's why there's been a surge of economic growth in China while ours has stagnated for over 20 years.

Economic freedom eventually spawns political freedom; at a fundamental level, they are one and the same.
