could this be the only problem? this process seems a bit tricky, i would like to know for sure if this was the problem before i do something like this.

This being the exact same reason ill never buy second hand electrical equipment. Nine times out of ten you just get skanked and you dont get such a bargain deal you thought you had got
i paid very little for these, and i wouldnt be too pissed if the repair didnt cost too much.

Second hand techs have shown to be worth the $$$.
If you have basic soldering skills and a soldering kit it will cost you next to nothing and wont take you much time at all.
I bet if you went to get it serviced they would charge you $50!!!
