if you go to italy and tell them about guidos, they won't understand wtf you're talking about. Guido is a genuine name in Italy, first of all. the "guidos" that we all know and love so well in italian-american society are a sub-culture of 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation italian-americans and apparently is a virus because i have seen plenty of guys/girls from other origins look exactly like guidos/guidettes. when i try to explain what a "guido" is in america to my cousins in italy, they laugh of course and they say their equivalent are the "chavs" ..aka white trash. but guidos are so much more than white trash. they are incredibly vain, highly-nationalistic (tho carrying false knowledge of their supposed culture), juiced-up, electrically-tanned, materialistically-minded, ignorantly-blissful sad excuses for young men & women who usually cannot see beyond their own circle of friends because of fear of the unknown outside their provincial lives. this insecurity allows them to have a big cirlce of "friends" that share the exact same lifestyle as them. (because they fear anything else...vicious cycle). most of these people never leave a 10 mile radius of their own hometown, (not including a trip to, say, miami where they find people of similar views for a short timeframe and perhaps a trip to the motherland, where they are usually ridiculed, which only perpetuates a stubborn, "i'm better than you and i always will be" mentality...)
if anything, at least they are realizing that they need to get a college degree these days if they want to make money to continue their "bling bling" lifestyle...they love to lavishly throw money around on transient, usually material things (ie their cars, their jewelry, clothes, hair, gym memberships and buying lots of drugs and drinks at clubs to see horrible live performances of 1992 freestyle groups TKA and Susie Q and George Lamond). you'll rarely find more than 3 books in their bedroom, 2 of which are Dr. Seuss limited edition for grammar school graduates, the other of which is usually Curious George.....but back on the subject of this paragraph, nowadays they are encouraged to grab that piece of paper called a college diploma if their parents haven't already encouraged them to not worry about higher education and just take over the family business- of course, learning only 1 way to run it, which would be straight into the ground.
i'm not an expert on this but i am a product of a guido upbringing. yet i am not a guidette. i have grown up around it all my life and have fought it since the moment i realized what it was and the fact that i was about to be suffocated by this type of lifestyle (aka parents constantly urging me to go out with my italian friends because they are extremely insecure and closed minded when it comes to other nationalities and don't like the fact that my closest friends are chinese, colombian, korean, irish. guidos/ettes around my towns and in my family are a LOT of the reason why i went away to school, in rhode island (not that far but far enough). |
that was a REALLY good post...well said!
