Not saying that there's no money to be made off of collage work (or loop work). It just pushes you further away from being "one in a million" and closer toward the other 999,999. You can still make it work for you if you've got a lot of editing and arranging skill, but making an original tune out of loops is actually a lot more difficult than making an original tune out of synths and sequenced one-shot samples. More often than not, loop-based music sounds derivative, dated, and devoid of any real creativity or effort.

And yes, feel free to hang my analogy on your walls (but just remember, you are better off creating your own analogies )

If I just rearrange it a little bit, then it'll be my own work

Reminds me of the sterotypical kids with fl studio who think there the next big thing when all they have used is a couple of loops.

this is what I am afraid of becoming. once I figured out Reason I spent days trying to make a decent drum loop with Redrum only to get frustrated and resign to using Dr. REX. then I found some synth loops and thought, hey, this sounds great. but the reason production is far more appealing to me than DJ'ing is because I have a problem with playing somebody else's music, which I feel is basically what I'm doing by using preset loops. I got into it to play my music.

I guess the answer, like always, is to just keep practicing.

*shrug* Not that big a deal, I always EQ out the lows anyways.

Not to sound callous, but I think you've just demonstrated the single *worst* reason to use pre-made loops - lack of success with creating original sounds.

Use loops to enhance and embellish if you must, but not as a staple of production and a substitute for real effort.

i personally don't have any problem using drum loops (including reason presets) because a lot of them are live recordings of real drums, which is something i simply don't have the ability to make myself (though i do have a drumset, i don't have the adequate mics/mixer). i always tweak or splice the loops though depending on what i want, and layer them with custom loops.

as for melodic or bass loops, i've never understood how anyone can use those and call whatever they've "written" original. usually when i compose a song i start with a main melody that i've come up with and go from there.

and to the thread starter: i've been dicking around with putting techno stuff together on and off since the late 90s, and only now am i growing satisfied with my results, though i still have a long way to go to compare to some of the talent on this site. it just seems that every song i put together is better than the one before it. keep at it.
