I agree with you completely. As much of an honour it would be to participate in the opening cerimonies and carry in the flag, if the athlete honestly is pushing for the best perfomance of thier life, they would be quite stupid to partake should they have to compete too closely to that date. I gave up all drinking and putting any kind of crap into my body for 5 months leading up to the world martial arts championships and was trainning 8 times a week and had put in 12 years of my extra time into it before then leading up to it. there is no way on earth I would have intentionally done anything that could have negatively affected my performance in the single days leading up to the championships... x10 had it been the olympics! The parties afterwards are insane!... but everyone knows that when it is said and done, they did their best and got the result they deserved. Now if I had just squeaked on to an olympic team and knew there was no chance in hell of me even comming close to placing, then maybe I might change my mind because at least then you may get more out of the experience. but even then I can't imagine an athlete at that level that would hold an attitude of hopelessness towards winning, if that were thier mindset, I find it hard to beleive they ever made it that far.
many of these athletes are also depending on doing well at the olympics to gain further endorsment deals when they get home, this is thier livelyhood on the line aswell.
