While I agree that the pandering to the west may not have been a great bit of rhetoric for all those who are uneasy about a Conservative government I don't think you need to worry too much. I've said it before and I stick to it, Harper is in a difficult spot because the basis of his support comes from grassroots members in the west who are socially conservative, they feel they have been marginalized for years, and now they want the pay off for their support. Unfortunately, in order to hold power he needs the votes from the red tories (especially in Ontario) who are not socially conservative and will not accept a federal government pandering to one region. I think what you heard last night is indicative of things to come. Harper will pay lip service to his base supporters while not taking any action to alienate the soft conservative voters east of Manatoba. Don't get worried that all of a suddon the country will turn into Alberta or that the federal government will restrict itself to foriegn affairs and international trade. Harper is savy enough to know he has to govern for the entire country and paying disproportionate attention to one (vote weak) area will not further his cause.

if that's the case, then I'll be content with him as PM for 2-3 years. But, given the things he has said in the past various social issues, and depending on who he appoints to his cabinet, I still am very wary.
