Yeah, they definately need jail time for this. If all they did was wreck each other's (parent's) cars I could see suspension and probation ... but they killed an innocent. You can't allow that.

Writing the story is not a waste. There are all sorts of people that will put the blame anywhere except the kids (or themselves) and tv, movies, games all provide a good scapegoat. All of these people are eager to have evidence to back up their convictions that they are not responsible for their own bad actions. Subsequently, if they read a headline "Video Game Leads to Fatal Accident" they're going to buy that paper, read it, and feel secure in the knowledge that forces outside of themselves are at fault for everything bad that happens in their lives. The key in all that is that people will BUY the paper. That's why the story is carried, because it sells. Whether there is any validity to it or not the paper sells copies when they get a story like this and that revenue is reason enough to run the story.
