Haha well it's not really a "debate" because no one has come in here and conteracted what we've said. I mean the only ones that would are the ones who are into the harder stuff that doesn't quite have the same soul as the "fluffy" stuff that some people despise on here. To reach there own..i'm proud to say I like quality fluff without the cheese!

I know what you mean buddy

Trance to me is so much more than just a music genre. I think about it all day. Honestly. I couldn't imagine a life without Trance music. I'm having a hard time though, since 80% of the latest releases fail to raise my interest. That's why I'm listening a lot of old livesets and old tracks nowadays. Other than that, Trance music gives me a feeling inside that I 'll never experience with any other music genre. It's not like all Trance is not always bad nowadays, ofcourse there are many tracks worth the listen.

Then there's the kind of people who enjoy yelling that Trance music is dead in the present time. I don't agree. And for those people who think Trance is dead, let me tell you this. The scene has provided me with enough terrific tracks over the last few years. No one can take that away from me. If Trance music would stop right now I'd have a good enough supply to satisfy me till the day I die. I'll never stop listening to this music. I'll take my music with me till the day I die. Trance is something beautiful that gives and has given me an enormous boost in life. It helps me get through. This scene is so goddamn beautiful. Fuck yeah.

Yeah I have liked this music since 1998 so it's grown on me to the point where I'm not as used to listening to other music, well most vocal music at least. I haven't gotten sick of it. Many people tell me "your going to get tired of it" or "you have to progress someday" as in only the newbies to electronic music still like trance music. Not so...I have just found other artists who have similar feelings with the music they produce. It's not just trance music i'm after, i'm after music that has feeling, that has melody, that is almost theraputic in quality. One of my current favorite artists is Ulrich Schnauss, and if you listen to some of his songs, you'll notice that his music is very much a "listening" style of "trance" music and I put those in quotes because it's not officially labeled as "trance" but in a way it is. Some may call it downtempo, or ambient, but I like to think of his stuff as a mixture of a bunch of stuff, highly unique, but definitely if I had to label his stuff, it would be "trance-ambient" or even "downtempo-trance". It builds and shifts alot like trance music does, but at a much slower tempo.

The same can be said for some of Chicane's older stuff. I could see more artists in the future emulating Ulrich Schnauss, and in a sense, bringing trance out of the dance floor and into the living room. Thats not the say dancing is bad, or going to clubs is, but some people who like this music aren't as into the club scene as others, I'm one of them. I can tell you i'de much rather DJ at a club then just attend them, unless of course I found some really cool people who share some of my same sentiments about the music...which is pretty hard to find...but maybe there's more like us out there...

* Two posts from my "MySpace" blog.

Trance Is More Than Dance Music

Okay this is just an extension of an argument I put forth or better yet another way of looking at the music I am passionate about. I personally don't see the music I enjoy as party music. I don't see it any different than rock music, just more electronic, more ethereal, and textural. It doesn't have "bands" per say. I'm not really a part of the club scene right now. I've been to a few clubs, I've had a good time. My parents don't want me going to clubs in Detroit alone and it sucks but I'm not just going to drive down to Detroit alone either at night or go home. It's just not safe to be at say 2:00 A.M. or later by yourself. I figure the best way to get anywhere is to work hard once I get my equipment up to snuff (I need my recording interface, then studio monitors, ableton and then get down to business). Sure some of my mixes lately have been quite the dance floor fair, real typical, but to me this music goes beyond just the dance floor. It's music for your mind, your body and your soul. It's got meaning, it's got purpose, it's got beauty. It's just incredible music that I feel isn't just made for the dance floor. It can be used to tell a story, take people on a journey and yeah dancing might be a part of that journey but ulitmately I see it's potential to be more than just for that. Compilations could be made that had more of a message to it, flowed like a story and was one big piece made up of many little pieces. Thats my personal view.

My Definition Of Trance

Okay this is for all those who come on my page and think i'm into the club scene and like this music as just music to dance to. On an earlier blog I mentioned I feel trance is more than dance music, well this is my lengthy explanation of what I feel trance is and what trancedence is.

Trancedence: More than oneself; To feel closer to God or a Higher Power: To feel like one is in another world or closer to heaven on Earth.

Trance to me is music that is inherently trancedent in feel. Whether that is conveyed through uplifting and euphoric melodies and textures, or through hypnotic rhythmns and beats. Both of these things are trance music. Trance can mean the subtle yet addicting melodies and irresistible ambience of Ulrich Schnauss, the peaks and valleys of an epic trance song with a heavy beat, and a truly euphoric breakdown with pianos and synth washes, or progressive music with melodies repeated through, with a subtle breakdown or shift over time and then forming a new or added melodic layer. This could also mean really rhthmnic music with lots of bass, ala psy trance. This psy trance is not what I am into. Psy may "put you into a trance" but I don't feel it's "trancedent". Trancedence is what I look for in my music, thus trance is what I often group it under. It started with Enigma, then to Moby, and then to Dead Can Dance. After that I started getting into the stuff that was really labeled as "trance" and after listening to it for so many years, from many of the artists listed on my profile, I came to think of trance now as "trancedence", and trancedence happens to different people by different sounds or feelings that come about. It's not limited to feelings of euphoria like the music I like, it can be in-trancing rhythmns, it can be chants, it can be really space effects. It could be ALMOST anything. But this is what trance is to me.

Trance is a state of mind. It's more than just a genre of music. Many things like i've said are not labeled trance or put in the trance category, but are very trancedent in feel. I could list a million ambient artists who produce stuff that is just trancey, but Ulrich Schnauss is an artist who has almost created a new sub-genre of trance music, one that takes trance out of the dance clubs and raves, and puts it into a truly listenable experience. I mean it follows a similar melodic and shifting framework. Listen to the song I have on my profile, that is a perfect example of trance music made for listening.

With my music, I want to feel for it. One of the reasons I'm not into Psy, is that from the stuff I have heard of it, I just don't feel for it. To me it's dance music, it's drug music. I mean that sounds stereotypical, but Psy music is inherently acidic sounding. I mean it's always been that way. Sure it's grown but it just doesn't have the same feel as the uplifting, epic melodic stuff and the melodic, progressive stuff that i've been into. This stuff just has much more raw emotion. It just makes you feel like your in heaven, floating on a cloud, or on a sun soaked beach somewhere, watching the waves crash upon the shoreline. It's just AMAZING music that can be and is more than just club music, it's more than just dance music, it's more than just music. It's almost indescribable. It's just so profound that no words can truly express it's scope, it's beautiful, it's spiritual and it's emotional.

Note: In the "My Definition Of Trance Music" I'm NOT bashing psy, so all those who are into Psy and read it, don't flame me with "you ignorant prick" or whatever. It's my opinion. I'm not saying it's BAD music or that all of it is DRUG music, and I realize I stereotype just like everyone else does at some point in their lives (sometimes it's better just to realize you do..admit it, then just do it and not be conscious of it). But it doesn't have, in my view, the same emotional impact the more melodic varities of trance does, like epic and prog. When I sit down and listen to music, I like melody and emotion. Thats why I like the stuff I listen to. When I want to dance, i'de dance to Psy or Techno or any of the harder stuff, but I wont put a CD on and expect to have an enjoyable experience from it.

Yeah, when it's something I'm passionate about. I should participate more in the politics/debate area, but I'de go on and on over there and come across as a damn fool! Haha which I already do sometimes lol.. Thats why I have a blog, so I don't (I can talk to myself that way without anyone flaming me) even though I've been busy with school and haven't had any inspiration to write anything in there thus far this past week.
