Good list! I especially recommend #2, as us bedroom DJs don't often get to turn our music up. That's got to be the coolest thing about playing at a huge club - hearing your music completely amped up with the floor shakin' and the kids breakin'.

haha, i think this list is a good idea, i mean for preparing yourself to beat match, but then it takes a lot of practice, you cant just take your turntables on the first day and beat match it perfectly if you have never done it before, it might get frustrating but it will pay off when you can do it with ease. so practice away and record your stuff =)

i have a question for everyone.. how long does it take you to get 2 records matched up perfectly so that they hold for about 1-2min..

this is almost never possible (unless you've noted the exact pitches beforehand). I mean, I think 15-20 seconds is excellent. But remember that you have to keep going back and make little adjustments. If the whole song is like 4 min. long, you don't have much time to make it as perfect as a 1-2 min. synchronization.

Some good tips there for sure. But as these are pointers as to how to prepare to beatmatch n that i thought id have a go at explaining actually how i beat match myself. Firstly i'll explain that with this technique i learnt how to beatmatch in a week if not less. Now ive been DJin a month i now do 95% of my tunes almost perfectly matched.
So here goes :

1. We'll start by explaining The Tune that is already playing will be called Tune A and the one to be beatmatched and brought in is called Tune B. Also the a)'s will be the technique for vinyl and the b)'s for the CD Deck technique

2.a) So Tune A is playing and Tune B is ready to go. Firstly find the start of the first proper beat on tune B. Then if your using vinyl rock the beat backwards and forwards so that u know where it is. Then have your headophones so u can hear tune A and B. Rock Tune B back n forward wiv the beat of A. When u feel comfortable let go wiv a slight push. The two tunes should now be playing in your headphones.

2.b) Okay again Tune A will be playing and tune B ready to go, You now need to cue up tune B. Do this by finding the frame before the first beat (You should be able to tell the frame b4 as it wont have a clicking noise on it whereas the frame after will, the clicking is the start of the drum beat) you should then set this frame as your cue point. Then when u feel comfortable press play trying to make the beat of tune B hit on one of them on tune A.

3.a) So now the two tunes are playing together in your headphones they will more than likely be hitting at different times creating a double beat. You now need to either speed up or slow down track B so that it hits at the same time as A (Speeding up can be done by gripping the spindle and twisting it the same direction as the record is goin or by physically placing a finger on the record and spinning the record a little faster than it was already goin. Slowing down can be done in similar fashions only the opposite obviously. Also to slow down you can let your finger rub along the bumps on the side of the platter) Okay so now the beats have hit at the same time unless the two tunes are the same bpm already which is unlikely they will go out of sync again. Now the key part here is to listen as to how quickly it went out. Now if it was within a matter of a 1 second then the two tunes are a mile out with their bpm's and so there will need to be quite a change plus or minus with the pitch, but if it goes out after say 5-10 seconds then they are much closer and so u will need to increase or decrease the pitch a lot less.

3.b) Now again u have the two tunes playing at the same time. The technique with CD Decks is the same as wiv vinyl shown above only to speed up or slow down tune B you will need to use the pitch bend (assuming your decks have this) either way bending doesnt matter at this point as long as u get two beats to hit together. Then again as with vinyl the key is to see how long it will take to go out.

4.a) Okay so now ur beats are out of sync you need to work out whether they need speeding up or slowing down in order to bring them back together. So lets assume for example the beats went back out of sync instantly. Choose to speed the record up first, do so and then listen carefully to see whether the beats have come closer again. if they have then the tune needs speeding up, so change the pitch upwards to say +1% then try again to sync the beats and wit for them to go out. If you were right then the beats should stay synced for a longer period of time. U can now repeat this process again and again to perfect the matching of the beats. If u go too far and when u speed the track up to bring the beats back in and it goes further out then u need to bring the pitch back down a little to correct this.

4.b) Again the technique here is similar to vinyl as stated above. Listen to the tracks and when they are out use the pitch bend to speed up tune B if it goes further out then it needs slowing down but if it goes closer together again then it needs speeding up. The advantage of most CD Decks is that every time u press the pitch bend or spin the wheel then it is increasing or decreasing by the same amount each time and so u can gage whether the last change in pitch you made has helped.

5.a) So now once you're happy that they are fairly closely beat matched u should listen to them together for atleast 20secs but if u want to be really sure then anything up to a minuite. during this time time u can make slight adjustments to keep the tracks together. Make a mental note of when it does need correcting whether its just a slight speeding up or slowing down and this should then help you when u come to mix the tune.

5.b) Same as above ^^ (Cuz im lazy and cant be arsed writing it out again )

6. You should now have tune A and B fairly well beat matched and ready to mix.


Okay there we go (took 45 mins to write), god knows if all that makes sense to any1, but thats the best way i could describe it.
I'd like to say b4 i get flamed that im not saying the is the way to do it, all im saying is this is the way i do it and it works for me. Please leave any comments u have bout this tutorial like whether it worked for you or if it didnt why and if you cant understand anything ask and i'll try to explain it a little better.

This is a very begginger guide to mixing for those djs that are having the dj jitters:

they way i do it is one ear out one ear with the headphone on.
next listen to both songs: speakers for the song playing and headphone for the other song (duh). start incrementing or decrementing the pitch as necessary for the song not being played. Next, put your headphones on after you think you got the beats matched and listen to both songs at the same time as they are matched on the same beat. Listen to the songs play together for at least 64 beats. If the two songs begin to go off track and sound funny before the 64 beats is up...do the following: tap the record thats not being played on the speakers just a little to see if it solved the problem...if this is the case, lower the pitch cause its going to fast. Otherwise, you can push the record not being played on the speakers just a little bit until the problem is solved, and in this case, increase the pitch because it is going slower than the record playing on the speakers. Most important of all, every little fucking micron increment that you make on the pitch control matters. The slightest increase or decrease will make or break a nice 64 beat or longer mix. So keep calm, play at parties, crowds help because they make you play under pressure, and most of all have some fucking fun!
