Yea, people admit to guilt with presets. But I can honestly say the only time i've used a preset is for a starting block. Then I tweaked it.

As for unstable? Yea. I would say that the filter cutoff anyway in Vanguard is particularly weak at the low spectrum at points, the 24db roll off can stress quite a lot.

For ME anyway when I make an interesting bass to mid-bass filter sweep with Vanguard i get some pops and clicks.

Oh well. Like ax said earlier, it will be a classic in it's own right.

I use vangaurd in all of my tracks.
In fact it's my most used synth.
I make great sounds with it and I'm not sure what you are talking about.
I mostly don't use presets, and if I do then I tweak them a lot.
