imagine a professional opera

why do they paint their faces and wear customes?

they don't have to, it's to heighten the experience.

trance/chemicals/lights/lasers

... and despite all the saying "all that music is only for drugs", I CONCUR!
I have never taken any illegal drugs except weed and I totally freaked out on it although I just had smoked little ... and even the legal drugs fuck me up pretty bad with fairly little amounts ... so I'd say drugs are not good for me at all and I go without them!
And I listen to psychedelic trance - music, that is probably even more connected with drugs than the commercial/generic trance stuff. But I don't need drugs, all psychedelic stuff I need is in my mind already ... and when you want to state now that E is oh so good and whatnot I say that I can reach a higher level of endorphines through the movement of the body while just dancing! No drugs, clean system, wonderful music - all I need

SO PLEASE STOP SAYING IT'S ALL FOR THE DRUGS!

Seriously when was the last time you were at a psy party, looked around and 99% of people wernt tripping out of their minds? Thats the best thing about them... that many people on acid... its something amazing and powerful. So many minds in an excited state of awareness. Substitute that with alcohol instead and can you imagine how shit it would be?

Club trance has its pills, psy trance has its hallucinogenics. Either way you look at it, trance is about being driven into an altered state by the music and a shitload of chemicals. Thats what sets trance parites apart from other parties... people expanding and relaxing their minds through music and drugs. Or atleast it used to before it became the politically correct politely packaged commercial cheese that it is today. Without the drugs, trance would be in a shit state of affairs. People just arnt that enthusiastic normally.

since we're on this topic... i can easily remember how an alcohol buzz is like, i can remember how it's like to be really stoned at a rock concert, but for some reason when i'm rolling and getting down to electronica, i can barely remember how it's like to be in that state, you know... "one with the music"

also, if i'm really stoned and listening to electronica, sometimes i feel "one with the music" as if i dropped a pill. any similar experiences?

Yes, man, I know ... once I was in that situation and everybody around me tripping and I obviously picked up their "mental vibe" and had closed eye visuals myself! And it got so severe that I got sick and had to go home ... and slowly, slowly on my way home the effects faded!
And no, I haven't been on anything but drinking water from the sink! Nothing else! I was frecking SOBER and freaked out! Beat that!

So ... let's say that the music has been created not for the drugs themselves, but rather for a special STATE OF MIND, okay? How you achieve this state of mind - may it be with psychedelic drugs or just with plain insanity is entirely up to you. Most people use drugs, others are insane, but what matters is the state of mind - not how you get there!

Well said.

This whole "Music is for drugs" line is so utterly nauseating.

wow that post sure made some kids squirm

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it but it is obvious that this music has a strong drug connection, the reality is everyone into this music encounters drugs and the people who decide to stay away from them are the MINORITY. This music is made to be enjoyed in clubs and on pills, if it werent that way then the artists wouldnt perform in those kind of venues, instead the only type of places where you can find EDM without drugs are at christian events.

You need some reality check sir.

Pills, Drugs, Drinks, Whores -> They are found at EVERY club/party regardless of whether it is playing EDM or not, or there is a DJ or not. To use the term like "This music is made to be enjoyed in clubs and on pills" is as true a statement as "This country has a president with functional brain".

Music doesn't need drugs to be enjoyed. I am not into drugs and i enjoy my EDM as much as anyone. And many of my friends/colleagues are the same too. One doesn't have to fry his brain-cells to be able to appreciate any kind of music.

Yeah, honestly I don't like that EDM has associations with drugs; we as a community should try to change that...so we can actually say we are above rap and rock. And all other forms of boring genres.
