This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls
and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.
This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home.
What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!

hmmm....you guys dont actually think this is true, and just so that we are all aware you can pound the hell out of the # button and all you are doing is sending that button to a premature death.
The real reason why you get people calling your house but no one is on the phone is simply a by product of a computer generated dialer. Simply put you will have one telemarketer on the phone, but the dialer will dial up to 4 calls for each person, the caller will connect to the first person who picks up, and a diologue ensues while the rest of the calls are left in a silent limbo, hence the reason why there is seemingly no one there.
Most good call centres wont fall for any of these tricks, I've been working in telefundrasing for 8 years and as a manager of a call centre this kind of tricks dont work....at all.
Tip: if you dont want to ever receive a call, just tell the person "thank you for the call (because these people are human and are working like everyone else) I am not interested in this call or any other correspondance whatsoever, please take me off your phone and mailing lists" be polite, and respectful as it will go a long way.
