To me, epic and melodic trance with breakdowns is trancedent music, music that is heavenly, ethereal, euphoric, floaty...makes you feel outside yourself, uplifts your spirits, the feeling is almost more align with some new age and ambient music like Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, Enigma, some Delerium, Enya etc.

Other forms of trance are more hypnotic, like goa and psy, as well as a good majority of the deeper, more rhythmic progressive, and the harder stuff like tech-trance and hard-trance. These can also be "trancedent" as well, but it depends on the artist, the feel of the music etc. This music is stuff that when dancing or listening to it, in a sense puts you in a trance.

Both of these are equally trance, and will put in a trance, just a different type of trance. While the epic and melodic stuff creates feelings of being in heaven, of floating, the goa, some prog, tech and hard stuff tends to create an altered state, similar to the epic and melodic stuff, but I guess in a more druggy, trippy way. It's kind of like taking ecstacy vs. LSD. I don't do drugs, but ecstacy is more of an upper, it puts you in a good mood at first (euphoria). Thats what the epic and melodic stuff tends to do. The other stuff like Goa/Psy, that is more LSD, it'll make you feel like your seeing things that aren't there, hallucinations. Thats just the way I see.

I'de even add that the epic and melodic stuff seems to be more influenced by new age/ambient/prog rock groups/artists like Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, some Mike Oldfield, Brian Eno, stuff like that, but with a much stronger, dancey beat. This is stuff that has been around since around 97 and 98.

The other stuff, the goa and psy, well that's been around longer (early 90s) but it's more influenced by traditional native and indian music and techno music, with maybe some influences from psychedelic rock and industrial. Prog seems to be influenced by electro, various styles of house and detroit and minimal techno as well, and hard trance and tech trance is definitely influenced by techno, acid and hard house and acid or hard techno, with some influences from others sub genres as well.

Listen to a classic Armin or Ferry set, vs. a Sasha and Digweed set, and you'll notice the difference in feel, sound and structure. There might be some similar tracks, but for the most part, it's different. But it's all trance. So it shows you there is not one right definition for trance music, trance is quite diverse. By the stuff you listen to and why you listen to it, it takes on a personal definition, as trance does different things for different people. I appreciate both, but I find myself being mostly drawn to the more epic and melodic stuff that puts you in a good mood (mostly instrumental, non-cheesey stuff mind you), because I feel like it is stuff I can connect with and listen to on a daily basis. Not to say I wont pop in a CD or buy a CD or MP3/Wav with the other stuff, I just have a passion for the melodies and feelings of epic/melodic trance.
