That's a real tough question to answer, but most of what I'm about to say is through general observation. Here's what I feel why the U.S. as whole do not have the strong enough ties as we once did back in the day:

-voted for Bush again
-unwillingess to do anything about the countless holes in the official 9/11 story
-unable to push change in the media, we're getting misinformed or spinned stories and the public doesn't know it

That's if the military follows our government. I honestly can't see American Soldiers firing on American Citizens. I think they would drop their guns, and refuse. At least some of them.

And yes, I know about the vietnam protests, but this would be different.
