DDR(or 2) SDRAM is SDRAM at twice the data rate. Plain old non-DDR SDRAM is old, but probably not found on any PCs for a few years now.

I had problems with the onboard LAN on the nForce4 board, but never any problem with audio. I'd suggest AMD as well, I just built one cheap and fast.

Oh no wait, it must be this one:

Thing is, I can't seem to get a straight answer on this, is SDRAM replacing RAM now or are they referring to permanent memory storage?

Bottom Line:
This mac vs pc bullshit sucks. Stop it, get a life. He wants a pc, your replies are of no use. Make your own topic if you want to, go make yourself usefull somewhere else. Get the point? I really don't see how you can read the word maturbation but you can't seem te read the topic starter isn't looking for a mac! GEEZ!

The set up I'm looking at:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB)

Operating System Genuine Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition

Memory 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz - 2 DIMMs

Thing is, I can't seem to get a straight answer on this, is SDRAM replacing RAM now or are they referring to permanent memory storage?

I'm sure this seems ignorant to some of you here but honestly I just havn't had the time to sift through hundreds of articles and figure it all out.

Can anybody give me a straight up, un-sugar-coated answer here?

It could be smart to turn off hyperthreading. That technology is good for multi tasking. But if you use reason for instance, this technology will limit the accesible processor bandwidth. This means you'll be using approximately 50% of you processor power instead of the full 100 in quite a few cases. Sequencers which support multi-processors shouldn't have a problem with this I believe.

Another thing, windows xp media center edition isn't interesting if you're buying this pc primarily to use as a audio workstation. Windows xp professional would suit your needs better.

wow.. there really are some true wankers here on this forum.. Maybe he's new to it all? Maybe he never thought of a Mac, maybe he's now got a wider range of options then just a Windows based PC..

so:

1. A Mac is an option to anyone who's looking at buying a PC (Personal Computer for thoes playing at home) so it's a very vailid..

2. Who is forcing? No one.. again, just an option

3. Did someone drop a mac on your head or something when you were yong?

4. Forget Mac vs Pc, It is proven without a shodow of a doubt that Mac OSX kicks the fuck out of XP (and lets not get started on Vista *cough OSXVista*

so just chill out.. let people have there opionions and don't flame others for not sharing you opionion..

I always wondered if mac heads get some type rebate or some compensation for trying to convert unsuspecting potential customers.

As far as the original poster, I would recomend amd processors as they are cheaper and faster, dual core, the most memory you can afford, minimum 1GB , bigest hard drive and the rest is mere details. One thing I would strongly advise is to take a good lcd monitor, don't even think about the tube, such as those 24" from dell and samsung. Resolution is more important than size. It's surprising how many people neglect the display part of the configuration but it's undeniable that it creates a huge productivity increase once you can view and do more at once k.

my understanding is that media centre is tuned for handeling.. well.. digital media like audi (mp3,wma), hdTV and DVD.. not really tuned for your day to day workings.. also designed (tuned) to run the applications to do the above efficently.. thats what it's for.. so guess thats what it's best at doing..

XP is ya allround powerhouse in the windows word (2003 grate for IIS stuff, but not designed for running multiple programs)

just my 2 cents
