Actually... I was thinking that an ideal place for him to play would be Parking on a Thursday... especially with his style of techno!

Steve Rachmad is not a name here, he hasn't played Montreal since Sona years ago and he rarely plays North America as it is. I really can't see Aria forking up his fee plus flight for his manager from europe, when it's often suggested they don't even make money on someone like Liebing.

There is interest in Canada to bring him though by year's end... I hope to see it happen!

A bit of a summary of my night this past weekend seeing a few techno legends!

btw - I was wrong in my previous post, Rachmad has NEVER played Canada actually! damn shame!

I arrived in NYC close to 8pm, a bit later than I had expected but there were some delays on the train with customs and stuff. I made a few phone calls when I got to the station and jumped in a cab to 73rd West and Broadway, it was raining all day and it didn’t let up the whole time but it was still nice to check out the scenery en route to the hotel room, definitely reminds me how small Montreal is comparatively. Once I got there we were waiting for the promoter to pick us up for dinner so we just hung out and had some drinks. The promoter came by around 10 and we all went to this place called Cafeteria, which was a really nice little place open 24/7. Food and drinks were flowing, we ended up leaving around midnight to go to the club.

Got there and made our way to the booth. It is elevated and is its own little room that can hold about a dozen people comfortably and it even has its own bathroom! You can definitely tell the club is an old church, not just from the outside but the interior shape and general layout of the club. When all the rooms are open the place holds 3000 I am told, but in the main room we were in it looks like it is about half that. The place was starting to fill up but it never got packed, I am sure the fact that it rained for about 24 hours straight at that point didn’t help much either. The dj warming up for Steve was the promoter – Dave. He played a nice set, some mellower groovy stuff and then Rachmad came on around 2. I was expecting him to play a set much like what he played at Awakenings a few weeks before that but I enjoyed this one even more… he definitely played harder than I expected and even dropped some of his classix like Tir Na Nog on Rotation and Virton on Music Man!! I love it when I hear a dj drop one of his older classics, like hearing Mills play the Bells or something.
This guy started chatting with me and then I realized it was Tony Rohr! He was there just hanging out to give Rachmad some promos. He was telling me a bit about some of his Toronto gigs, and when I mentioned it’d be nice to see him in Montreal, he told me he had just played with Barbara at Fuse a few weeks ago and she really enjoyed his set, and would like to see him play there as well, so you never know! I am sure he would put on a great show - live pa or dj set.

Rob Hood arrived for a set that was going to start around 4. He continued where Rachmad left off and played harder than I expected from him for sure. I didn’t recognize many tracks but one I hadn’t heard in ages was a remix of UK Gold’s Agent Wood. Both he and Rachmad played exclusively vinyl as well which is a rarity these days. At one point I was sitting with my friend on the couch that’s right behind the DJ and said to him “would you ever have thought that you’d be sitting between me and Rachmad at 4:30 am listening to Rob Hood drop some seriously good (and harder than we both expected) techno!?” it was awesome.
Hood’s set got cut a bit short and they were ushering people out of the club around 5:15. While we were waiting for the promoter to drive Hood to the airport, he was telling me about a few gigs that stood out for him recently and he mentioned his last gig in Toronto! That was kinda neat because at that point he didn’t realize I was from Canada either. My friend ended up driving me to the train station and he was giving Steve and his manager a ride back as well, so we all said our goodbyes and I got some wicked promo cds - listening to them right now actually!

I slept most of the way back which was perfect. Reflecting on the night it was well worth the journey, I had some great conversations throughout the night and met some cool people, some I had never spoken to before, and others who I have only talked to online. The trip ended up being pretty cheap too, only ended up costing me one train ticket and one cab fare! Can’t complain one bit.

I will post some pics when I have them, there were a few that I was in that I am anxious to see especially!

a night to remember for sure.

I remember Colin telling me about the Rob Hood gig @ Footwork - he played surprisingly hard. Sounds like a wicked time - nice tracks you mentioned there too
