I have never read the books, have never seen the films (not even clips,) and the only knowledge on the stories that I have managed to pick up about it, is that there is a place called Mordor, and one cannot simply walk into it.

It really isn't that bad. It reads at about a 9th grade level, and its purely for entertainment. Of course, their is a little allegory and social commentary in it as well.
One thing I do admire about the books is it's continuity. I'm not talking about within one book, but characters from book 1 might appear in book 5 without changing mannerisms or speech. Other authors who write book series have trouble with this and sometimes mix up minor characters; this is one of my pet peeves in series'
It allows for more in-depth reading if required, but that really isn't the series' purpose (i assume).
