Nowadays, all my songs have a supersaw or modification of a supersaw. It's just a pleasing sound. And I don't think my style of music is particularly clicé or anything, it just turns out that way.

Hell, I don't even listen to modern trance! It's all about Sasha circa 1998 man!

Specific Elements (Stuff that can be implemented without much thought):
-Arpeggios
-Staccato synths
-Acid (This is actually pretty open-ended. A lot of stuff qualifies as acid.)
-Pads

Composition (How to put your track together)
-Slow build
-Incremental changes

Intangibles (Stuff that requires a feel for the music):
-The right kind of percussion
-Atmosphere

As far as the instruments you use, these are a major part. There's some wiggle room; you don't need all of them to make a trance track, but they're very good indicators of the tranciness of a track, and some of the tranciest songs have all of them, even at the same time.

As far as supersaws go, they're better if they serve one of the above purposes. They sound great in arpeggios, pads, staccato sounds, and as acid. Don't knock them, because they can be very good instruments when used properly.

Fast basslines, twisted alien screams, massive stereo image, leads that turn into freaky micro fartz. Ultimate bass thumping, what else? Oh yeah, vocals that melt into water bubbles of pudding. Slippery zaps, panning percs.

Weel, I guess the basics in each major EDM-genre is (and I'm talking the acctual basics, abstract though it is):

Techno - Machinery, soullessness, and repition
House - Funk, soul (and lowpassfilters for breakdowns of course ;D)
Trance - Sensual, spiritual. It's suppossed to put ya'll in some trance when getting freaky in the club wiv it!

To me, the perfect Trance-tune (if there ever was one) is Motorcycle's As The Rush Comes. Maybe Frankie Wilde's Rise Again too.

For House, Fedde Le Grande's Las Vegas and Tube And Berger's Tubed. They kickass. But I listen mostly to House so I know of more "perfect" House-track than I do Trance-tracks.

And for Techno, wtf it doesn't matter what track you listen to really, Techno is Techno. But I like Mauro Picotto (Can't remember the co-producer's namne though) - Alchemist. It kicks-ass. Maybe it's not "pure" Techno, but sure is Techno-ish.

Well, whatever, really, music is music no matter what you make of it or call it.

And well, onion pretty much hit the nail on the head. Its a subjective answer.

For me at last trance has always been about inducing a kind of hypnotic sensation through constant rhythym. To induce a trance like state. That is the fundamental.

Whenever I listen out for trance numbers I dont care about humongous breakdowns or uplifting riffs or any of that. Alot of the time that stuff just takes you out of the hypnotic trance. And its a weird irony that commercial trance in recent years has very much distanced itself from the original hypnotic groove in favour of massive breakdowns and harmony.

I find it much more difficult to explain than to just tell you some songs that capture the essense of what Im trying to say. Then you can hear it for yourself

Listen to something like Astral Projection - Trance Dance. That for me is kind of what trance is about. Its nearly 10 minutes long. The beat drops out for about 40 seconds out of the whole track (The bassline doesnt ever stop) and the song feels about half its actual length when you listen to it. There is always movement. Something going on. And if you listen intently enough theres a kind of ebb and flow to the way that various elements in the track interweave and flow in and out of each other. Alot of really good trance tunes in my humble opinion have that kind of ebb and flow. The idea is that you can lose yourself in it.

Castle Trancealott - Indoctrinate. When people talk about trance trance (not psychedellic trance), this is what I tend to think of. Just have to listen to it really and make up your own mind. Oldie but goodie!

Voice of Cod - Just a Ride. Thats another song where the percussion and bassline drops out for maybe 30 seconds in all of 8 minutes.

Space Cat - Beam Me Up. I always thought of this stuff as trance because you could be listening for like 3 minutes and suddenly you will notice 'dude! theres this rising acid squelchy sound and its ripping through the track!' Only its been playing for the past 2 minutes but you just never noticed it in the background until it started to rise to the fore.

I dont know. The essense of all that is vaguely what the basis of trance is. at least for me.

Techno doesnt really have that kind of ebb and flow but then it doesnt even try - Its very rhythym oriented but in a funkier, swingier kind of way. Its a different type of music for a different part of the brain for a different night out.

Very well said. I agree. Isn't that why it was originally named Trance?? I think even the tempo has something to do with it, but that can get deep. I think breaks can still keep you in that hypnotic trance too. Builds tend to lose it kinda but breaks if they are very chillout can def keep you in a trance state IMO. But yeh, the new stuff really isn't the same. It's more of a pop music kind of spin off from original trance. But still very cool nonetheless and I love it all even some cheezy Eurodance. I said "some".

to induce trance you have to have all the elements and lots of layers but the key is

to do it dramaticly ,gradually you add elements slowly,every 4 bars then when you reach a dramaic climax ,you have some breakdown of sort. then you have your reprise/or middle eight section where you have only one element playing and you continue to slowly add more elements then you gradualy but slowly build back up to the main chorus,introducing new elements surprising the listener.


2 things to keep in mind if you just play your main riff with no change it will sound dull.

and if you never induce trance your track wont be trance.


so my elements would be some fx,percussion,pads ,a mixture of happy and sad melodies to create tension,and a epic main riff
