I'm really sorry to hear that. Was looking forward to trying it out. Why do you think it was such a poor turnout? Was it advertised well enough? To be honest, I only heard about it off Paul Kershaw's show on Galaxy FM. I didn't see any fliers or promotional stuff anywhere. The entry price seemed reasonable. The club's certainly a good one (from what I can remember anyway...!). Maybe you needed a couple of big named headlining DJs (no disrespect meant to the DJs who played that night). But I know that's easier said than done these days.
Or maybe the trance club scene really is dead after all. I really don't understand what people have got against trance. You never hear anything bad being said about house. That seems to just keep going and going, same old, same old. It hasn't had to go away and reinvent itself. And house clubs/DJs seem to be doing as well as ever.
I will admit, I don't know much about recent trance, but that's only because I haven't been clubbing for ages, and the only radio show I listen to is Paul Kershaw's (it used to be Judge Jules, but he lost the plot a long time ago...) but I love the stuff he plays on there. I don't keep comparing it to what was around back in '99 (and why should we anyway?). I just enjoy it for what it is. Am I the only one...?
I know I only play classics in my mixes, but this isn't because recent trance is crap, it's because they're what I know and what I'm good at. And if 7 year old tunes can send shivers up and down my spine every time I listen to them, the genre can't be that bad.
As a comparison, when I was at Stafford College in 1992, I used to love happy hardcore, drum and bass, jungle, etc. And yet, 7 years on in '99, I thought it was crap and couldn't understand what I ever saw in it. I guess other people are looking at trance in the same way. I just can't see why!
There's a venue in Wolverhampton called the Civic. Every Friday and Saturday it plays host to Cheeky Monkey and Blast Off. It's been going for years, and it's packed, both nights, every week. The "DJs" (I use the term loosely) play the same shit every bloody week. 80's, 90's, indie, rock, bits of dance, etc. And everyone in there gets totally pissed and "dances" (I use that term loosely as well) but to be honest, they're usually all so drunk they'd dance to anything the DJ played.
Maybe that's where trance club promoters are going wrong. Maybe the price of alcohol should be substantially reduced, promoted even. Maybe this is why lovers of dance music are so picky. They don't drink enough alcohol...! But then the pill heads are more interested in how cold the bottled water is, and the piss heads wouldn't be interested, even if they liked the music, because the price of alcohol is way too high. I think the last time I went to God's Kitchen, bottled beer was over £3.00. Who in their right mind is gonna pay that willingly? Entrance fees of between £10 and £15 don't help either.
Oh well, that's my rant over with. Maybe I'm getting too old for it all now anyway. I enjoyed the 4 years or so I had in clubland. I guess I should be grateful for that.
I hope you have better luck at your next venue.
