honestly, i think i'd rather have that option than not have it.

the option of prostituting my body legally because i'm not interested in any other work or just out of plain bad luck.

The woman still has a choice, no? I don't buy this "being forced" argument. Perhaps "path of least resistance" is a more appropriate term (subjective as it is), but nobody is forcing a woman to become a prostitute.

Oh let me rephrase my prior statement ... state governments have no business legislating morality. The federal government doesn't have jurisdiction in this issue as evidenced by the fine state of Nevada. Anyone up for a trip to the bunny ranch?

I'm of course pro prostitution. In Denmark you cannot join a union as a prostitute, so they're all self-employed. Brothels are usually run by having either the prostitute hire her room or have customers pay a fee to use the room.

Anyway, the point about being in favor of free prostitions "but only as long as the girls are not forced", seems to be a non-sequitur. Being *forced* into a job is terrible and should be condemned no matter the nature of the job.

Yesterday in a news broadcast in Denmark, a reporter documenting his feat by a hidden camera, bought himself a sex slave in Romania. Price tag was about $2000, and he was free to take the girl with him.
Apparently the local organized crime units threaten the girls with severe consequences to their families if they don't accept their fate. I'd say that that borderlines "forcing a woman to be a prostitute", but I guess it all depends on how you feel about your family.

BTW while we're on the subject of prostitution. Does anyone know what happened in earlier times when there were no contraceptives and prostitutes had real sex with their customers? Say, a few centuries ago? Were there a lot of births from prostitution?

1) There was science before Latex. (lambskin)
2) There are many forms of contraception. (diaphram, birth control pills, sponge, vasectomy/historectomy, etc)
3) There are even some improvisational forms of contraception/birth control. (withdrawal)

But to answer your question, I don't know. We have heard of plenty of historical figures that were whorespawn (sorry, the word just had a ring to it). Of course, in the same breath, the average life expectancy was also much lower. Potentially mitigating factors?

Well--Romania vs. USA. Sorry--by default I assume I'm talking about the U.S., without really considering places I've never lived in. But in a very broad, general sense (local/regional consequences aside), there is nothing wrong with prostitution being legal. I mean I've been to strip clubs hundreds of times and it's really no different. I mean the gray area is so small. Not to mention some "special" massage parlours around town. Prostitution clearly serves a niche (whether you agree with it or not) and doesn't aim to harm individuals. But like I said, having some regulations/guidelines to follow wouldn't hurt given that you're talking about people having multiples of multiple partners, exponentially increasing the risk of STD. Given the increased risk, the industry would certainly need some regulations.

Speak for yourself. Maybe if you didn't play WoW all your life you wouldn't need a prostitute.

What makes you think they can't be forced into it?
