I believe the biggest danger to the U.S. this year is not from terrorist but the prediction for the upcoming hurricane season.

1) Lack of any El Nino pattern will mean weak westerlies. Strong westerly winds shear off the top of developing hurricanes and weaken or destroy them.
2) Atlantic Ocean weather patterns look the same as last year as far as hurricane development is concerned. The current La Nina pattern would cause more strong to severe hurricanes.
3) For a reason more complex than I understand, they are saying that the year 2006 should closely resemble 1938 which brought a summer that was
a) very hot, but with more thunderstorm activity than 2005 in eastern U.S.
b) the deadliest hurricane ever recorded to strike New England, with 180 mph. wind gust at Long Island, N.Y. NASA's Prediction on a repeat of that storm show it would be more costly than Katrina, especially with the path of that storm having grown much more densly populated. Also in the same decade Floridas deadliest hurricane occured, and a major one struck the Baltimore-DC region.
4) Time is running out for New Orleans to be prepared for this years hurricane season.
5) While the Midwest droughts of last year probably wont return this year, strong spring storms & tornados could take their place.
6) Explosive forest fire conditions are possible in some parts of the west this summer, where some places are in year 10 of above normal temperatures. Warmer winters in some parts have caused a major increase in pine bark bettle, killing off large sections of Lodgeple Pine Forests ( a dominent tree in many parts ) adding to the burnable fuel.
7) Unrelated to hurricanes, geological studies are showing that a catagory 9 earthquake & massive tsanami hit the Seattle region in 1700. Geologists predict that that fault has a massive eruption approximately every 300 years. Such an earthquake could also help trigger volcanic activity, such as a repeat of Mt. St. Helen ( 1980 ).

Actually if we are doing what is the biggest danger the US faces I'd say teacher's unions.

What does the port deal have anything to do with the Democrats moral fortitude or being radical?

1. The Republican Congress were the ones who used the ports for political advantage, so don't blame it on the Democrats. BTW, I don't fault them either everyone is getting sick of the Bush administration, hidding stuff and then trying to force things through without a debate. This is supposed to be a Democracy not a Dictatorship where King George word is final.

2. Bush and the Republicans have always used security issues to bash Democrats. Whats a matter he couldn't take his own medicine?

3. UAE isn't just any Arab country. They were one of the few countries who recognized the Taliban, a number of the 9/11 terrorist came from UAE, Al Qaeda laundered money through their banks, and they didn't support US going into Afghanistan. So for all those reasons and more I feel its our right to say no. I remember you didn't have a problem when we shut out countries from doing post construction in Iraq because they didn't support the war. I don't see how this is any different. You can't have it both ways.

You wanna explain that one? I think I know where you're headed, but even if you are, I'm still not in agreement, but maybe you'll surprise me.

I just perceive it like this:
Republicans will play a little politics with security.
Democrates will play a lot of politics with security.

As for the port issue being democratic, it was the democrats who cried wolf first, the Republicans just joined them in with them because they were crying so loud.

I think Opus cover the topic in depth.. you can see how the democrats swiftly reacted with critism without even knowing the facts on the ground.

As for..

No not really, if I did I would have opened a thread about it.

But the short of it is that the USA education system is a piece of shit, is going deeper into shit, and it will not go under any change (not talking about the whole voucher, privitization system here even) so long as the teacher unions are as strong and forcefull as they are.

Unless we can fire incompetent teachers and actually have discussion as to why the problem is what it is there will be no betterment. The USA's only hope then will be to pray China and India's teachers are as messed up.

The teachers, like democrats cyring port, repulse at just the mention of looking at things with reason.
