Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man that sucks.

I keep everything backed up on external harddrives. I would seriously cry if I lost the combination of pictures/music/school files on my PC.

I've learned to love my dvd-burner.... bi-monthly backups to an 8.5gb disc does the job of backing up important stuff.

The torrent networks are the way tp get viruses if you've ever wanted one. SOrry to hear about the loss. How many different file system were you working with?? 1 NTFS? 1 fat32??

viruses can't travel across partitions.

how do you know it was a virus? if it was, tt was probably ony in the boot sector, although it could have eaten all of that files on that particular partition.

have you tried to connect the drive as a slave to another computer? i would do that and copy the data to an external hard drive, and run a vscan on that. just be sure not to copy possibly infectious data to another user's valuable drive.

hes right its prob not a virus that can travel across partitions..if ur using BT a port prob opened up where something hit your computer ..

take out the drive n hook it up to a buddys to see if any data can be salvaged and thats the "best" way to do a data recovery..having it hooked up to the original computer wont have the best results

good luck

I'm running 2xNTFS 2xfat32(including sd)

DigitalMP: I haven't tried hooking the drives to another computer, that's a very good idea - actually, I think that's the reason both the recovery programs I've used so far on this computer have come back with only traces of deleted/infected data.

knowning that all drives are infected from looking at all the data...what's the safest step I can take to ensure it doesen't copy over to the other computer during the recovery process?

either recover to a third internal drive (the first being the OS drive on the good PC, the second being your faulty drive) or an external drive.

edit: you can scan your drive for viruses when you connect it as a slave.

you may even just buy a cheap 60GB drive off of ebay and use that for your OS drive, then connect this one as a slave, and run a vscan and clean it.

if it's hardware, you'll need to buy another big drive anyways. if it's a virus, just clean it and use partition magic to merge the partitions.
