No sequencer is supposed to crash, and your processor neither. not even when your processor is pushed to it's max. I don't think more RAM of a different CPU is the right solution to your problem as mentioned before by Contra Spike.

Most of the Opteron line is 940, however they also have a socket 939 line also. The 100 series. I have a 165 in my DAW. Paid 270.00 USD Only thing necessary to do with your 939 mobo is flash the BIOS.

both! there are those for 940 boards and since last year there are opterons for 939 aimed at the low-end servermarket. I have a dualcore opteron socket 939 and in my oppinion it is the best choice for audio given the price. audio benefits a lot from the big l2-cache of those cpu's

edit: seems like I wasn't quick enough.
I have the same cpu as tecnolover and I have overclocked it from 2x1,8 to 2x2,7 without any problems. many motherboards don't even need a bios update

I'm running an Athlon 3200. The socket 939 version. I overclocked it for fun but I have it running stock for production purposes and I have yet to max out my CPU, and I've tried. I think it is the cheapest chip you can find for socket 939, and it is more than adequate.

well the same problem existed when i was doing a music production course. the sequencer crashed well not exactly crashed but when you try to save it, it freezes. this only happens when your running over 5 or 6 vst's. so its obviously something to do with the cpu or RAM. wish i had paid more attention in a level ICT.

So we know vstis will use up your cpu whilst samples use up ram.
Nearly everyone here has and will recomend you upgrade your cpu but just to get the most out of things, when your cpu is getting maxed out mix some tracks down to audio so that your taking some load off the cpu and putting it into the ram.
