my opinion is that now although it is easier for piracy these days, so the record companies lose money. They are now making more profit by selling mp3s as they take away the cost of designing artwork, cutting vinyl and burning cds. Example on monday i bought an album for £7.99 which i downloaded, where as if i bought it in a shop it would of cost me around £9.
Also a mate of mine runs a small label which is mainly downloads for releases only certain tracks get a vinyl release. If he had to make artwork for every track and release it on vinyl he'd probably have to shutdown. So selling mp3 as a format is giving more people the opertunity to get their tracks out there
