I dunno. When it has an Ed Potten quote of "...one of the most moving pieces of electronic music ever..." pasted right on the back of the slip-case, I expect to hear something that'll completely and utterly floor me, reducing me to a quivering mess of emotional pudgin'. Rather, I got something that 'sounds nice', but not much else.

Come on. The fans tend to rate it alongside the likes of Leftism, but it's nowhere near.

So... it's overrated because you don't like it?

Yes. Hence "over-rated". I think it's over-rated because the good ideas are under-developed, and the bad ideas are given too much attention. The vocals never really come off like you'd expect them to, and seem to be there simply to gloss over the fairly basic music underneath. It doesn't strike any particular emotional levels either.

This all might be because I heard Furious Angels (the album) by Rob Dougan prior to Wide Angle, and the two albums are pretty similar. However, Dougan's orchestrals are much stronger and are given more free reign.

Wide Angle isn't a poor album, but if you read reviews and especially the quote Sykonee repeated- you expect something special. And it doesn't deliver. Leftism (my example) is critically acclaimed, has huge sales to back that up, is notable in terms of EDM history and is packed full of unique and undeniably well made tracks. Even if you dislike it personally, it's easy to see where the hype comes from. But Wide Angle doesn't have any of that. It has one bona fide great track and a lot of average to good stuff.

Yea, Leftism is a great example...and I think Way Out West's debut is another. I may have initially been taken by the glossy orchestrations on Wide Angle but the thrill faded and I sold my copy a few years ago...WOW's debut on the other hand still sounds fresh to this day. I just shared the album with someone who had not yet heard it and his first comment was how ahead of their time he thought they were in what they delivered.

people dont put that much effort into electronic music. they could... but instead when they have a good sound going they keep going with that and dont take it much further.

is it not too hard to fathom that many people do think this about it & that is why it got such press. Just because you & the other 'critics' don't see it in that light doesn't make it any less good. The mere fact you've only reviewed it way past the time it was fresh rather than at the time when it made its impact just tells me that it's another case of "making comments about anything 'popular' just for the sake of it" You can try to polish up your reviews & replies as much as you want, they will always have the underlying bias.

Fuck off Ian. Just fuck off. I paid £12 of my money for this album based on the reviews I've read, without consulting anything else. I was looking for a great piece of music, and I paid my money willingly for it. And it dissapointed me. How the fuck am I bashing anything popular when I've just fucking praised Leftism- an album which has sold around a million copies worldwide and was voted the best dance record ever by producers? Answer me that, you ignorant shit.

If you can't defend the music you like, then shut your mouth. Don't throw around shitty, unfounded attacks on my opinion and my reasoning when I'm the fucker who's got the effort to actually detail why I dislike something.

Do you not even remember the days when you didn't get the chance to listen to the music before you bought it, where you only found out afterwards if you had a gem or a crock of shit? When buying a cd with a couple of tracks you knew helped introduce you to many more ?

i'll continue this in the morning, i cba to now

Prior to purchasing Wider Angle, the only Hybrid productions I had heard were their remixes of Café del Mar and Papua New Guinea. I shit you not. I bought this album because it had been widely praised, without any knowledge of what it would sound like. I fucking ordered it on import on Amazon, and sat there for six weeks waiting until some cock in the US cancelled it and I had to find it in HMV. Does that sound like the actions of someone who just downloaded it so he could rip into it, and then cast it away? No. It doesn't.
