Yes. Hence "over-rated". I think it's over-rated because the good ideas are under-developed, and the bad ideas are given too much attention. The vocals never really come off like you'd expect them to, and seem to be there simply to gloss over the fairly basic music underneath. It doesn't strike any particular emotional levels either.
This all might be because I heard Furious Angels (the album) by Rob Dougan prior to Wide Angle, and the two albums are pretty similar. However, Dougan's orchestrals are much stronger and are given more free reign.
Wide Angle isn't a poor album, but if you read reviews and especially the quote Sykonee repeated- you expect something special. And it doesn't deliver. Leftism (my example) is critically acclaimed, has huge sales to back that up, is notable in terms of EDM history and is packed full of unique and undeniably well made tracks. Even if you dislike it personally, it's easy to see where the hype comes from. But Wide Angle doesn't have any of that. It has one bona fide great track and a lot of average to good stuff. |
is it not too hard to fathom that many people do think this about it & that is why it got such press. Just because you & the other 'critics' don't see it in that light doesn't make it any less good. The mere fact you've only reviewed it way past the time it was fresh rather than at the time when it made its impact just tells me that it's another case of "making comments about anything 'popular' just for the sake of it" You can try to polish up your reviews & replies as much as you want, they will always have the underlying bias.
