Im my experience if the monitors facing me are too loud or of bad quality, I just put both cups of my Sony V700s over my ears and monitor at a lower level. Its hard as I feel I need bass and volume to cue perfectly, but its some sort of ear protection.
As an outsider to this thread, I don't see why clubs don't just turn the music down slightly if the entire crowds hearing is at risk or if people find the sound uncomfortable.
I have ringing in my ears (have since I was young) which is amplified when in a club or when I mix at home for around 2hrs - I'm very conscious of it and the long-term implications.
