If you're going to get a laptop, either jack it the fuck up so it lasts you 3-4 years or plan on selling it after 1.5 while it still has market value.

I would only get a laptop if you really want/need it. You can make a desktop last much longer and add much more internal storage space.

If those programs work with MacOS X and are either A) capable of running under the Rosetta emulation implemented into OS X 10.4.4 which allows PowerPC programs to run on the new Intel Macs, or B) have Universal Binary versions of the program you want (this means that they've been re-written to run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs

I have no room for anything but a laptop.

Maybe a cheap PC is the way to go for now?

Cheap? Yes for sure.

You can build a really sweet desktop for under $1000. Everything you need, and then some.
