Websites are not charities. They have costs (servers, bandwidth, software, content creation costs, etc) and need to recoup their costs somehow. Advertising allows users to use websites at no (or reduced) cost.

I can understand user reservations about being "bombed" with ads, but TA's single ad spot (top left) is hardly intrusive (regardless of what is in the ad spot [adsense, flash, etc]).

If you are logged in to TA (with your username/pw) you don't see google ads (except possibly in the top left).

I have no problem what so ever with the banner ones at the top, in fact I like them to certian extent. I just really dislike the plain text ones. Tribe went all out and throws them in between every couple of replies in thread and it's just plain annoying, they also switched over their forum browser to a different format and it really is the most boring thing I've ever seen in general black and white. The TA format has definately grown on me with its high contrast colors. If they are going to advertise at least make it something interesting to look at and keep it off to the side. I wouldn't leave TA if it was just one or two extra ones here and there.

Only when you're not logged in under your TA name do they appear.

Personally I don't even pay attention to the ads, but I don't mind them. I know that they need to be there if we want this site to stay up and running...so whatever...just ignore them. It could be worse. At least we don't have 8 billion pop-ups and so many ads we can't even see what the forums are about.

It was annoying I find when I view if ever not logged in.

I suppose one will adapt to them and not so much notice them though after a while... really depends on the frequency with which Del decides to disperse in the threads!

For those of you who use ad-block:

A site offers it's content/access at no cost to the user (under the unstated agreement that advertising will pay for your viewing of said content).

How does it feel to be stealing the content from the content provider (website)? You aren't paying for the content - but someone else is. If you block the ads, you're effectively accessing/consuming the content without the content provider being paid for it.

How do you expect content providers to keep providing you "no cost" content if you block their only revenue/cost-recovery opportunity?

----------------

The reason people pay for the movie channel is because there are no commercials. CBC, CTV are available at no cost (since advertising pays for most of the costs). If someone were to offer a broadcast feed of CBC or CTV, with the commercials tripped out the CRTC would step in immediately, since it is signal/content theft. If if someone was to rebroadcast the commercial-included signal, but profit off it it - CRTC would again step in.

I see no difference between ad-blocking and the television example provided above.

Using ad-blocking software is the same as not paying for the content your accessing. IMO this is wrong.

The logic of most people:

Convenience* can and does justify so many things in one's mind. That's the reality of it.

*Convenience in this sense of not being 'bothered' or innundated with ads they wish not to view/see (despite whatever 'good' reasons behinds the ads being there in the first place).
