Axis and Allies is an awesome game. I think the creators purposely made it so that if you follow what happened in history the same result plays out. While this did bias the game against the axis, it was quite fun (for awhile) to try different strategies as the axis to try to win.

I still have Republic of Rome lying around. Trouble is that it really takes at least four people to get really interesting (breaking alliances is never much fun when the other guy is a dummy player), and I don't have that many nerdy friends anymore.
I've also played Axis & Allies, but like Risk, I started to hate it pretty quickly. The heavy reliance on dice is to random for me.
